"Doing something original when the most commercially viable option is to do exactly the opposite requires large testicles and a strong sense of identity. Ana Kefr would plainly benefit from a bigger production budget, but there''s nothing wrong with their material or the uniqueness of their vision. A wild and wilfully abstruse blend of scattershot death metal riffing, prog rock complexity and a disdain for toeing the line reminiscent of Psykup and Stolen Babies, the Californians'' sound exists so far outside the box that it''s both intensely refreshing and slightly terrifying. A welcome appearance from Tairrie B and Mick Murphy on a raging cover of Black Flag''s ''Step Back'' adds an extra dose of star quality to a compelling first effort."

"The [...] band I would recommend hails from Riverside, California and they are ''Ana Kefr'', a young band with a unique sound and outlook when it comes to their music which they refer to as ''Philosophy Metal''. Drawing influences from classic to heavy rock, it is lead vocalist/keyboardist Rhiis Lopez that gives this band the beauty within their chaos. With his razor sharp tongue and poignant edgy lyrical content, Rhiis''s style reminds me of Henry Rollins meets Mike Patton writing from an inspired true life perspective which leaves their songs almost feeling like they were penned by someone well beyond his years (something both bands have in common on different levels) - [...] one of the main things which separates this band from many of the so called ''art rock'' bands who pour out of California with depressing regularity in their same genre. ''Ana Kefr'' are pure operatic angst with a touch of pro individual self expressionism. ’AK’ are an intense live band whose muse comes from a thinking person’s response to this age of unreason, miles away from the mainstream music of today. And that''s a good thing."

"Brutal, terrifying and totally original, Ana Kefr are twisting metal with their bare hands...and it sounds fucking amazing!"

Is this where we began?
Blear-eyed Friday mourning, sun a nuclear pock mark in the cyanide-open sky. The whispers of children, nimbly strapping on their automatic weapons. The cadaverous flutter of hope? Frail figure of Mother ghosted in cavernous doorways; Father on arthritic knee, praying to the poison in the waters of our wishing wells. The outside world is a mock-ghost town. Dust for streets. Piss for water. Shattered glass and broken dreams. Sigh of society, I consume therefore I am. Walking suits and miniskirts, plastic biological accessories, the cut-and-paste rebirth of beautification. Mask and veil, crook and flail. Artificial personalities. Empty shells pace their way to the brainfarms - churches and governments, racial zealots and violent idealists, the cults of personality, cultivating the minds of cattle, manimals, the Most Holy Moral Majority. Even black sheep run in herds. Do you have the courage to admit the obvious? This is organized hypocrisy. This thirst for extinction. This is our future, another day in dystopian Paradise. These are prime conditions for the birth of mass dissidence. This is Baghdad, California, and we are ANA KEFR, the vehement voice of dissent.
Formed mid-2008 as a religio-politico-vehicle of uninhibited, uncensored expression and art, ANA KEFR (Arabic, "I am Infidel") has always meant to stand for the odd woman or man out in the crowd, the true individual and freethinker, the contempt of the sheeple and awakened reason of the people. Brainchild of vocalist and keyboardist Rhiis Lopez, guitarists and backing vocalists Trent Pichel and Kyle Coughran, and percussionist Bryce Loeffler, AK have swiftly come to their own, performing with such acts as EXODUS, MY RUIN, INTO ETERNITY, TAPROOT and MANTIC RITUAL, gaining a reputation and loyal following as they''ve carved their own unique mark within the contemporary music scene. With their edgy and often controversial lyrics, experimental approach to songwriting and devotion to individualism, standing out in the crowd has been effortless in a scene dominated by cheap imitation and sound-alike aspiration. The June ''09 release of AK''s debut album, "Volume 1," establishes a division long-since necessary - you are with the sheeple, or you are with the people. You are either for brutal honesty and change, or you are a part of the infestation of this Mad Hatter world, where the Religious Right and Islamofascists shout ''off with their heads!''
Let us reclaim the right to be proud to be human. Fear is no longer an option, neither is inaction. The sleep of reason brings forth monsters, it has been said. Let the heads roll.
