Details:
Bill Cunliffe''s first major gig was pianist and arranger with Buddy Rich, touring Europe with Frank Sinatra. He later performed with Ray Brown, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Art Farmer, Woody Shaw and James Moody.
Bill was the 1989 winner of the $10,000 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Award, and was Marian McPartland''s guest on her famed "Piano Jazz" radio show in June ''98.
His CD, Imaginacion, on Torii Records, spent a month in the #2 position in the JazzWeek radio polls. The arrangement “Do It Again” on the CD was nominated for a Grammy in 2006.
His latest release, on Resonance Records is “Blues and the Abstract Truth, Take 2,” a re-interpretation of the famous Oliver Nelson Album. This project also reached #2 in the JazzWeek Polls, and has gotten much critical acclaim.
As a composer/arranger, Bill has been nominated both for two Emmys and two Grammys, and has composed extensively for big band, chamber groups, choir and orchestra. According to the Wellington (NZ) Times, Bill’s recent concert at the Wellington Jazz Festival was "Best jazz piano since Oscar Peterson." The BBC Review recently said that "Bill Cunliffe is one of the great players of the day." The Atlanta Jazz Journal gave his album “A Rare Connection” five stars.
On the classical side, he performs his own distinctive arrangement of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” with orchestras, and performs with chamber music groups. His group Trimotif, blends classical woodwinds with jazz in original works and arrangements.
Amid all this, he loves melodic piano music, and had an opportunity a few years back to create heartfelt recordings of his songs with piano and synth. This resulted in a CD, Enchanted Journey. This new project, produced with David Kreisberg, expands this direction in some interesting ways... more use of electronic rhythms and exotic sounds.
