Some seriously heavy rockin’ from this Italian band - there’s definitely an element of ‘Appetite For Destruction’ era GUNS N’ ROSES and a touch of that vulgar TURBONEGRO, HELLACOPTERS rock ‘n’ roll too but merged with some balls-out garage punk ala NEW BOMB TURKS and some straight up ‘70’s punk rock too. The sound is solid as hell – really full-on and they really blend the powerful rock with the more stripped-down punk really successfully and that’s not easy to do, often bands that attempt this blend get too carried away with the rock side of things which buries the punk attitude and rawness deeply under the rock guitars and production but GONZALES makes sure that doesn’t happen. This is way more rocky than anything I’d usually listen to but, for my tastes, this is the best I’ve heard this stuff done – I can get with this and that’s mainly because the punk rock is so present which is a huge must for me. CHECK MATE IS A GREAT RECORD TO HAVE!!
