The legendary Smokey River Boys, on MCA Universal for three generations have been elected to the “Legends Hall Of Fame” in Branson, Missouri this week as announced by Hall Of Fame curators in Branson. The legendary group celebrated their 40th anniversary on the label in the year 2003. The current album out by the Smokey River Boys on MCA Universal and sponsored by Wal-Mart Stores everywhere is entitled “O Brother.” It is the # 17 album in the Bluegrass Billboard charts this week and the # 1 Bluegrass album in the Euro-bluegrass charts in Europe this week worldwide.
The single from the album, “O Brother” has been steadily gaining airplay throughout the United States since its endorsement by George Clooney who starred in the O Brother Where Art Thou movie. Written by Sr. Vice-President of Universal Special Products Division, Bob Zipkin and his co-writers Kimberly Ann Cook and Robert Metzgar, the single record has been endorsed by Hairl Hensley at the home of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and Ken Berryhill who is a DJ at the Vanderbilt University Rock station in Nashville as one of the most played single records in all formats of radio in Nashville. The song is published by the Walt Disney Music Group in Hollywood.
No one seems to understand what has made the “O Brother” movement so popular, but to date over 12.5 million pieces of “O Brother” product has been sold by music retailers in the United States and the soundtrack has topped the Billboard charts at #1 for over two years in the Bluegrass section. In addition the song, “Man Of Constant Sorrow” which is out by the Smokey River Boys as one of the Top-20 bluegrass releases of all times, has become a bluegrass cult favorite with college kids in California who call themselves the “blueheads of bluegrass.” The Smokey River Boys version is out on a special Handleman Bluegrass album entitled, “20 Greatest Hits of Bluegrass” in stores December 11th 2005.
The Smokey River Boys are played in every radio format in Nashville on gospel stations, country stations, adult contemporary stations and rock stations which has never before happened for any bluegrass group on the label according to the radio promotions director who promotes the Smokey River Boys on radio for MCA Universal nationally. The boys are so famous now that they recently signed autographs at one of the special Navy Intel military bases where they signed from 10 a.m. in the morning till 3:30 a.m. the next morning, signing autographs for over 2000 military families and their children. The current group which just appeared on the ABC Radio Network for a two hour “live” special with the Chaplain of Country Music at the Grand Ole Opry and the show’s host, Roger Fredinburg for “Legends & Legends In The Making” announced their election to the Legends Hall Of Fame by curators while on the air. Members of the current group include Robert Metzgar (lead singer from Texas) Stephen Hill (tenor) Woody Wright (baritone) and Doug Clements (bass singer).
