Victoria jazz vocalist Miranda Sage brings her sultry, sophisticated and expressive alto to a new collection of Latin-tinged tracks just in time to warm up the cold winter nights ahead.
With a repertoire that includes several South American elements, including a bossa nova treatment of "Serenade in Blue" a cover of Brazilian composer Ivan Lins'' "Island," and an original tango called "Alone at Last", the new CD, Daydream, is an intimate and classy recording that radiates both the warmth of the sub-equatorial sun and the coziness of a winter night''s fire.
Part of the intimacy comes from the rapport between Sage and her outstanding band of long-time musical friends. Renowned bassist Rick Kilburn (Chet Baker, the Brubecks, Mose Allison) holds down the rhythm section along with drummer Dan Brubeck of the iconic Brubeck family. Multiple Juno-winner Don Thompson (Sarah Vaughn, Sonny Greenwich, Rob McConnell and Lenny Breau) sets the mood with his tasty piano licks, while Sage swaps melody lines with some downright sexy sax courtesy of Juno-winner Phil Dwyer (Aretha Franklin, Carol Welsman, Moe Koffman, Ingrid Jensen).
Standout tracks include their seductive rendition of Irving Berlin''s "Reaching for the Moon," the sprightly "Up Jumped Spring" and the swingin'' "It Could Happen to You." Another notable track is "Song for David" a Sage-penned tribute to her childhood friend, the late Royal Winnipeg Ballet dancer David Peregrine. Taken together, Daydream is without a doubt the finest Sage recording yet, since the singer reprised her music career in the mid 90s.
