Details:
I have played guitar since I was 15, first by figuring out the opening of Stairway to Heaven. I knew I wanted to be a finger-style guitarist (back then it was called a finger picker). And though I listened to heavy metal, the songs I came up with on the guitar were much more easy listening.
With a mixture of Latin, some rock and an over-the-top finale, CITIZENS OF EARTH! contains music that is interesting, moving, fun, or a mixture of all three.
A description of the songs on this album:
Teece – Set in the Arizona desert, this lively bass-driven song takes a few twists and turns as it heads to a sensational ending.
Hank! – An upbeat song with a two-part harmony, this is the kind of music you may hear on a vacation south of the border.
Maria – A more contemplative instrumental with a slow-building crescendo.
Rico, Chico ... and George – Named after a George Carlin skit, this one begins and ends with the chorus, and in between is a continually changing texture.
Snooter – The little song of the album. Its three-four time and minor key give it a gypsy carnival tone.
Role – A European-sounding song set in a minor key that builds on the opening motif. Listen for the dual melodies at the ending.
Tuba Force – This song has the feel of Gospel music mixed with a nylon-stringed melody.
Buttons Howard – This song broke many of my own rules: It doesn''t follow a main theme, it changes styles six times, it is not melody driven, etc. Also, some parts that sound like a guitar are created by a synthesizer, and some parts that sound like a synthesizer are an effects-driven guitar. But it is fun! I got this song title from a person who called me on the phone years ago. I imagined this person to look like Esther Rolle of TV''s “Good Times.” Much to my surprise when Buttons Howards arrived at our house, he was a white and male.
Bobz – Probably the most “pop” song of the collection, this song features a strong keyboard and guitar interplay.
Ma & Pa Kettle – A country-ish, southern rock, mid-tempo song with a blues-type guitar solo and an ever-changing chord progression.
Citizens of Earth! – There are a few things going on with this song. It starts out with a piano playing a melody that shows up later in the song. It builds up with what sounds like an action movie theme, then it becomes a hard rocker. The song title is pays homage to UFO movies of yesteryear. Enjoy the ride!
I dedicate this album to my parents, Teece and Role Moritz. Thanks especially to my wife, Dana, who has listened to me play guitar since we were teens.
