Details:
Bomba represents a new generation of musicians schooled in traditional Latin and North American music forms. Jazz, samba, rumba, and son are all equally embraced for their cultural significance and musical relevance in today''s world.
Led by percussionist Mario Allende, originally from Chile, and Brazilian-Canadian bassist Rubim de Toledo, Bomba celebrates the passion, diversity, creativity and wisdom contained in these styles with every performance.
Allende and deToledo are joined by a most formidable musical family. The latest line-up includes drummer Raul Tabera, violinist Aldo Aguirre, and singer Luis Emilio Rios, all originally from Cuba. Additionally, Bomba draws on its extended family with the exceptional talents of pianist and founding member Chris Andrew, singer/percussionist Luis Orbegoso and renowned rumbero,
Israel "Toto" Berriel. This cross-cultural collaboration allows the band to delve deeper into their roots, drawing the direct lines between the Americas, giving Bomba their signature sound.
Since their inception ten years ago the band has toured most of the major festivals and theatres across Canada, into the US, and internationally to the UK, Italy, Cuba and South Korea. Bomba has been nominated for national music awards and three years ago won the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award.
"Cuatro Caminos" Bomba''s imminent 2009 release promises to be a glorious continuation of their recorded history. With Latin greats Inti-Illimani, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas and Alexander Abreu as special guests, this fourth album will introduce audiences to a rich array of Afro-Cuban drumming and song; rich Brazilian rhythm; Andean instruments and Jazz improvisation. The material maintains the joy and spirit for which Bomba is renowned, and will be a pleasure for listeners, dancers and connoisseurs of Cuban, Brazilian, Jazz and World music.
