A 12 track follow up to ‘The Gadfly’, this record is more mature and more dynamic.
The first few songs are the most socio-political, and thus the most reminiscent of Michael Burgin’s earlier work. However, the bulk of the album has a much more personal feel.
The instrumentation blends punk and folkie Americana elements seamlessly. The production is creative, Lo-Fi, and very moody. Lyrically this a very solid release. Burgin’s inspired and direct lyrical style shines all over the album, but especially on ‘They Are All Rocks, They Are All Hard Place, But You Are Never Stuck’, an uplifting tune about the freedoms and complexities of the human condition.
While I wouldn’t call any song on ''Death Will Tremble To Take Us'' a “drinking song”, much of the subject matter on the record is related to alcohol. ‘Alcoholic Workaholic’ is a working/drinking class anthem proclaiming drinking as “the cross on the backs of the lower class.”
If you like edgy creative and intellectual music, or if you like top-shelf lyrics that are direct and uncompromising this is the album for you.
