“Every song you never thought of is in there - evergreens inflamed by smoldering saxophone reeds, that double as kindling for the sacrificial goat; a string section of exquisitely bowed percussion and metal becomes a roofer’s torch for the pianists cigar. . . Time and again jazz raises its hand pleading for a rest-room, “pee in your pants” is the answer, there’s no respite, no recognizable exits on this freeway.”
— from the liner notes by Alvin Curran
Here with their second release, the multinational jazz/improv trio explores new and eclectic territory. Quodlibet is the brainchild of percussionist/composer Garth Powell. As he describes the project:
“Each work, though spontaneously composed, would rely on content that was extracted from an average of three totally unrelated tunes. The purpose was not to recreate these melodic fragments in the form of a medley, collage, or even as jazz quotes, but rather to internalize, abstract, and distill them to a point where their essence would be the material that was used for either the creation of a new musical phrase, dense polyphonic texture, or; an apposing contrast for harmonic tension.”
Drawing on a wealth of material that ranges from Soviet era cabaret tunes to Gene Pitney classics to 17th Century Italian opera arias, the result is an utterly original breath of sound which has been appreciated in concerts and festivals throughout the US and Europe.
