Details:
Roy started playing flute at the age of 9. At first it was just something to get him out of class but by the time he was 14 he performed in his first talent/variety show. This performance and the adrenaline rush he got from that night was the beginning of the passion and love he would develop for this craft. The next year in high school his band director Tom Passerella recognized Roy''s obvious talent and started him on the saxophone. Roy took to the sax like a fish to water. Tommy Grice, associate band director and fellow saxophonist, decided that Roy had the goods and took him under his wing. This is where Roy learned about America''s first true art form, Jazz. By the end of his first high school year this multi-instrumentalist had already developed a reputation as someone who could play anything he touched (bass, piano, drums, etc.) After high school he studied music at Mercer County Community College but got his real education by sitting in at every jam session he could get to. This was the school of hard knocks for musicians and also a chance for him to perfect his individual expression. His first professional gig was with a reggae band back in the 80s. After that he played with the Plex Band (a local New Jersey R&B band) for a number of years. Plex would become most useful in developing his performing and singing skills. Roy took breaks from the band so he could go on international tours with Queen Esther Marrow and the Harlem Gospel Singers on and off from 1996 to 2000 as a vocalist, saxophonist, percussionist and flautist. This tour is where he met his beloved wife Dawana Gudger-Richardson who is also a great vocalist in her own right. They have two beautiful children (twins), Tobias and Tabia. Roy also traveled with the national Broadway production tour of The Civil War starring Be Be Winans. Larry Gatlin and John Schneider. In this show he was an actor/musician/dancer (that''s right, he dances too) and understudy for the lead and other roles. Highlights of his career include performing at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1998 and at the Vatican for Pope John Paul, II in 1996. He has worked on projects with the likes of Leon Huff of Philly International and performed on stage with the greats like the late Woody Shaw, Charles Earland. Jimmy McGiff. Narada Michael Waldon. Dionne Warwick, 112 and Norman Connors just to name a few. He loves his music and his family with a passion and he thanks his Lord and savior Jesus Christ for all of his blessings past, present, and future. Although his career has been extensive, it is still very young. Look for great things to come from Extraordinary Talent.
