Begun while teaching in Saudi Arabia, Let’s Get Primitive highlights Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson’s live multi-instrumental presentation augmented by studio musicians from Nagoya, Istanbul and the US midwest. Basic tracks were recorded in Iowa City including a track by button accordian master Dave Moore. Then, ADAT tapes were carried to Japan where Naoyuki Ishishiro added bluesy guitar tracks. Next, One-Man traveled to Istanbul to add finishing tracks by Bobby Hendricks on tuba Chris Wadsworth on tenor banjo,and Turkish fretless guitar wizard Erkan Ogur. Back in Iowa City final dubs were added with Dennis McMurrin on guitar, Margery Johnson on spoons and percussionist Tiit Raid on chopsticks-on-metal-folding-chair. Bo Ramsey added his input on song selection and mix finalization.
The tunes are upbeat ragtime blues with jocular lyrics that illustrate life on the road, relationship conflicts, and tongue-in-cheek complaints about technology and the difficulties of modern life.
