Voomz is Marcelle Dandy. Making indie-electric sounds described as "Bjork meets Blondie," she has been hovering over Los Angeles caught in a twisted love affair with her synthesizer and computer.
After getting an early start in musical theater and piano lessons as a kid in Indiana, Voomz studied at Berklee College of Music for two summers during high school and was accepted into their degree program. However, Voomz decided to head west instead and was soon carrying her guitar as a singer/songwriter playing in coffee shops and singing with a rock band in dive bars throughout Los Angeles. After Voomz bought her first synth, her music started to evolve as she became more and more intrigued with computer and electronic music. She started programming homemade beats that she would perform off her laptop with a live drummer and DJ.
Voomz has since played the Los Angeles and Hollywood club circuit performing everywhere from Spaceland, The Viper Room, The Whiskey, and the Roxy to the legendary music hall The Troubador. These live shows have led to invites and performances along the California coastline at the San Diego Beauty Bar and The Minna Art Gallery in San Francisco.
After several homemade demos and a deal with an indie label that seemed to be standing still a year and a half later, Voomz decided to start her own label and release self-produced records in the meantime. Her self-taught skills on ProTools and other programs had developed significantly while making the demos, so all she needed now was a quality microphone to complete her home studio.
She opted for the Shure SM7 off a recommendation that it was the same microphone MIchael Jackson had recorded Thriller on and would only cost her around $350.
The debut LP ELECTRONAUTZ is her first professional attempt with this endeavor. Recorded almost entirely in her bedroom, Voomz also wrote, programmed, and played all the instrumentation on the record. The record will be released on her label, StuLover Records, in 2009 and will be available on Amazon, iTunes, and CDBaby.
Voomz describes the record as Astro-Electro-Pop-Art, but does not expect to always stay within that description when it comes to live shows and future releases, as she has been constantly evolving musically with each new inspiration. As artistic and eccentric as she is straight up pop, this spaceling is always changing, re-inventing and renewing her sound to challenge the boundaries of expectation.
She is currently in Pre-Production for her second release due in July 2009.
Additionally, Voomz has been selected as semi-finalist in the SCION Vocalist competition and will be flown to New York in March 2009 for the finals.
Stay tuned for more on Voomz, as this is but the very beginning.
