MY BAND
This album is full of love and positive energy. I had the greatest set of players ...top professional LA musicians recording with me included my producer,Grammy nominee composer/recording artist Rob Mullins piano, drums, percussion and keyboards. His beautiful and innovative arrangements were complimented by Larry Antonino (Wolfman) upright bass, Jimmy Roberts /tenor sax, and Carmen Grillo/guitar. I think you will enjoy not only my vocals but this fabulous band too!
Gwen Scott started life in Fort Worth, Texas. Her artistic focus began early with piano lessons at age five. She also studied and performed in ballets and learned to play flute in elementary school band. At home she was the youngest of four children and learned early on the importance of artistic expression. Her Mother was a painter and interior designer. Her Father was an entrepreneur builder who ran his business from home. Her parents were very involved in the art world so Gwen was surrounded by art and sculpture growing up. Her older brother taught her how to accompany herself on ukulele at age 9 leading to her first performance as a vocalist. She enjoyed performing and found opportunities to express her talents in musicals, and plays throughout high school. At church she sang in choir and also was an accompanist for other vocalists.
She enrolled at North Texas State University as a drama major but quickly changed to music, her first passion. While attending she was exposed to various styles of music and her interest in jazz became stronger while playing in the university jazz band. She also studied voice, harpsichord, percussion and music theory. After college Gwen joined a small band as lead singer performing some of the same songs that are now on her first CD.
After college Gwen was married and moved to northern California and had a boy and then boy/girl twins. Her focus became centered on family. Gwen’s husband’s business ventures lead to four years living in Singapore. It was a great experience that led to Gwen’s appreciation of the freedoms and choices of living in America. After the family returned from overseas Gwen continued performing weekly on synth. piano and vocals at Community Presbyterian Church in San Juan Capistrano California. Gwen also developed her talents as a public speaker doing narrations at the church as well as leading the praise band.
While continuing her passion for music and music study, Gwen raised her family and studied interior design in her spare time receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design from the Interior Designers Institute of Newport Beach.
In 2007 Gwen decided to once again pursue her dream of becoming a jazz musician. After picking up a publication by Rob Mullins, Gwen started studying with this master teacher on the recommendation of Janice Bastien, a church pianist also in Orange County who was also studying with Rob Mullins at the time. Ultimately this study led to the Planet Mullins “Student to Artist Program”. This was a turning point in her musical journey.
Unfortunately this pursuit was interrupted by… “Life”. Gwen became a part of what is commonly referred to as the “sandwich generation” caring for her family and her Mother until her Mom’s death in 2008. Two months later Gwen’s husband passed away suddenly in a freak accident. At this point Gwen had to make the decision to either postpone her dreams of making her first CD or continue to pursue them despite the tragedy and despair in her life. She decided to continue this journey because of her passion for music and understanding of it’s healing power. That positive decision ultimately led to the production and release of Gwen’s first CD “It’s All About Love”.
As a fan and patron of the arts , Gwen has great appreciation for the impact of music and the performing arts as positive and important parts of her life. She has passed these beliefs on to her children. Her son Andy is an accomplished bass player living in the Chicago area. Her daughter Heather is also an accomplished classical pianist. Her son Tom plays guitar and drums.
Gwen is very proud of her extended family and cherishes the many friends and colleagues she has met in her life. Her interests beyond music are dancing, sailing, staying fit, interior design, making new friends, not sweating the small stuff, always seeing the glass as half full and finding any excuse to laugh and have fun.
