Details:
This music was recorded on Sunday morning December 7, 2008, in Denver, Colorado. It includes Peter Harris''s Short Pieces for String Trio 1-5, String Trio No. 1 in four movements, and a song from a poem by John Crowe Ransom, sung by Garrett Smith. The String Trio is comprised of Megan Tipton, Chris Short, and David Short. The recording engineer is Jeremy Averitt.
String Trio No. 1 was written in 2007. The piece develops from a number of melodic themes, harmonic progressions and rhythms the composer invented with a small guitar over the course of a summer. The organizing principles of the music are for the most part derived from the characteristics of these inventions, however, purely intuitive modifications often have their way.
The Short Pieces for String Trio are more straight-forward metrically and rythmically. Each focuses on a different kind of development of basic material.
About the Composer:
Peter Harris was born in 1979, in Denver, Colorado. He studied philosophy at the University of Oregon, and for a brief time, at the University of Memphis. His earliest compositions were songs, without any sense of meter, sung to single tones plucked on a guitar. In 2003 Peter began working with Travis Bruner, a musician from Montana, on string compositions. Their three string quartets have been performed at various venues, most notably the Denver Art Museum. This unique musical partnership investigated various ad hoc methods for composition, producing string music as well as music for instruments such as quatro, trumpet, trombone, piano, and guitar.
Peter uses mainly a small "silvertone" guitar as a sounding board for compositional ideas, an instrument he took lessons on in his younger years. He has also performed as a singer and rhythm guitarist for a country-western band and composed many songs in this genre. He currently holds the position of Library Technician at a public school library and is at work writing another piece for String Trio, as well as a song for a female voice from a poem by Dana Marie Townsend.
Information about the music of Peter Harris:
Certain musical values are encouraged over others at each point in history, or in each perspective within history. A valiant case is made, either for or against any value, by a rigorous approach, or a miserable failure occurs, and we have to go on, in our way, after that. This music aspires to an indifference to confidence and showiness. This music is the result of a sustained and consistent, yet personally fabricated musical system. Unexamined, emotional states are allowed their influence; each miscellaneous, impure idea is developed according to its logic...correct, or not.
