In February 2007, 14 Cape Codders checked their instrument cases at the Aer Lingus ticket counter. We were Stage Door Canteen, a big band heading out on an Irish mini tour to reignite the love affair listeners once had with the American big band music. That love affair has lain dormant since World War 11, and we wondered, would it be the same 60 years later? Looking back, we’re not sure. But we had a heck of a time trying to find out. It’s a testament to the band’s leader, Roger Gamache that 14 struggling musicians would pay their own ways to Ireland to play Basie, Glen Miller, Sinatra, even the Commitments, just for the fun of it. Few of us in the band any apparent connection to Ireland, but it wasn’t too far a stretch given that our home base is Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub, a well run Falmouth establishment know for hosting great Irish music. The trip was Roger’s idea. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in the 1970s. In addition to his role as band leader, lead alto sax player, and founder of Stage Door Canteen, his musical carrer has included four years with the Navy Band and sixteen with the 215th Army band. Together with his wife, Peig Donoghue, in 1998 he founded the Brain Boru Pipe Band which performs Irish tunes in green kilts. The Stage Door Canteen, a collection of professional musicians and educators had two major performances in Ireland. One was at the Sugar Club, a well known venue near St Stephens’s Green Dublin. The other was in Virginia, County Cavan at the Ramor Theater, a former church renovated into a fabulous performing space. Both show were recorded by engineer Rob Pemberton and this CD captures a healthy helping of the fun that was had.
