The Scott Davis Quartet started playing around the Des Moines area in 2002 with the release of the album, “Almost Time”. The band has played periodically at the Cosmopolitan Lounge in the Suites on Locust in Des Moines as well as some of the wineries in the area and has participated in the Jazz In July program in Des Moines.

The band usually consists of Scott Davis, flugelhorn and middle-aged vocals, Dave Altemeier on bass and sarcasm, Jason Danielson on piano and sittin’ pretty, and Bobby Bobby Brown on drums and river stones.

The group plays a mixture of the originals from the two CD’s, jazz standards and some cover songs of different musical genres.

Scott Davis, a native of Des Moines, developed an interest in jazz as a student at Hoover High School (1973). Davis graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1977, performing in the award winning UNI Jazz Lab 1 Band and a number of small group musical projects.

Upon graduation Davis returned to Des Moines and started playing regularly with the Don Hoy Orchestra. He also began the Scott Davis Jazz Sextet, which played a number of concerts in downtown Des Moines in the late 70s. Mr. Davis’s professional career as a trumpet player and musician include work with the Des Moines Symphony, Des Moines Big Band, the Bijou Players, and the Festival Brass Quintet.

After spending several years with the Des Moines Playhouse Orchestras, Davis joined with Ed Kelly to form the variety band, “FreeStyle” in 1985. The group first participated in “Jazz in July” in 1987. The five-piece band continues to specialize in corporate events, weddings and dance parties.

In 1999 he co-founded the local blues band, “Fat Tuesday and the Greasefire Horns” which won the Iowa Blues Challenge in 2000. The Band was the Wednesday night house band at the Blues On Grand for over five years until 2006.

His instrumental jazz CD, “Almost Time” was released in 2002. The Scott Davis Jazz Quartet currently has a monthly engagement at the Cosmopolitan Lounge in the Suites at 800 Locust in downtown Des Moines in addition to performances at the multitude of winerys in the central Iowa area.

Continuing education includes a professional workshop for jazz at the Banf School in Canada in 1983 and a Master’s degree in Music Education from Drake University (1995) in addition to teaching .

Professional credits include membership in the Iowa Bandmaster’s Association, National Education Association, and the Des Moines Musician’s Association. Mr. Davis is a board member of the Community Jazz Center, which awarded him a Special Recogntion Award in 2004.

Mr. Davis’s teaching career includes ten years as the Waukee Middle School Band Director before coming to Goodrell Middle School in 1992. His bands participated in the Hooever Jazz Festival every year save one. Mr. Davis has been a guest conductor at the Des Moines All-City Diocesan Band Festival for a number of years. He also began teaching a Jazz for Seniors at the Pappajohn Center in 2006.
