I am a politically conservative, Christian man who writes songs about life. Life as it is, as it was, as it could be in my vivid imagination. My lyrics are sometimes "cute," sometimes "clever," and, when I''m lucky, fairly accurate to the point being put forth. Friends have called me a philosopher, witty, and quirky. (These are some of the more polite descriptions.)
To me, music has always been a way to express a mood, feeling, or interpret a situation. I sing from the time I get up to the time I go to bed at night. I sing songs I''ve written, songs my mother sang when I was a toddler, and parodies of songs made famous by others. I also sing my own "cover" versions of old favorites or new hits on the radio. I sing the same song the same way, almost never. My wife used to complain that I was "singing it wrong" when I would change the words or chords of a song I wrote. My response has always been, "It''s my song, how can it be wrong?"
"That reminds me of a song...," was the beginning of so many remarks by me that my wife started teasing me about everything being a song. (She came extremely close to the mark.)
"Tellin'' Stories" was titled by my wife, Bev. I was trying to think of an appropriate title for an album that intentionally dealt with a wide range of subject matter. She observed that the one thing all of my songs have in common is, "They all tell a story."
Garth Brooks once took exception to people claiming his music was no longer "country" and responded, "If a country boy plays it, by definition it is country. I grew up in a small Oklahoma town, so don''t tell me I''m not country." If we follow that same logic, my music is "Christian" although I have yet to find a "Christian" radio station I can listen to for more than about thirty minutes in my most pious mood without turning the dial. My songs do all have a Christian perspective, and if I deal with a controversial topic, I think you will find my position to be consistent with most conservative Christians. In other words, unless you are non-Christian, I don''t think you need to worry about parental advisories before letting your children listen to my music. In fact, some of my songs are well received by children.
My songs are lyrics attached to a basic three-chord country style of music. They are simple, clean, and honest. Sometimes they are amusing, sometimes thought provoking, but hopefully, they are always enjoyable. Try them out; let me know what you think. - Charley
