Eric Hyrst (1929-96) began his career in the 1940''s as a leading dancer with the Sadler''s Wells Ballet of England. In London he worked under Massine. He came to the USA in the 1950''s and danced under Balanchine at New York City Ballet. After touring with Alicia Alonso, he became leading dancer and choreographer with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. His choreography was acclaimed from the beginning of his career, and he went on to create over 150 original ballets, including collaborations with 12 contemporary composers. His ballet Premiere Classique was the inaugural for the opening of the Place des Arts in Montreal.
The Hyrst-Young collaboration was the subject of a documentary film entitled "Two for Ballet", seen on 64 PBS stations from 1991-93.
