Details:
WAHOO DO-RE, eccentric name and all, was a vocal group made up of Los Angeles session singers, anchored by the stunning singer/songwriter/arranger Randy Crenshaw. These tracks were created in the group’s heyday in the 90’s, and then submerged in a dramatically changing record industry. Recently the tracks were rediscovered by Carl Graves, David Joyce, and Billy Hulting. Amazingly, they have not dated. The music always meant to be an album – so here it is, at last!

Wahoo Do-Re’s singers are not only at the Olympic end of the talent pool, they are also highly skilled at working in every possible recording situation. Therefore, these tracks are set up to be versatile and usable for music professionals searching for music for their projects – whether film, television, live shows or recordings. This was not the original goal, but it was an inevitable outcome, based on the quality of musicianship involved. Tracks 1 through 8 are owned and controlled by Wahoo Do-Re – songs, publishing and recording.

Let’s say a music supervisor is looking for a bass & tenor vocal duet, no instruments, no other voices. We have it! As people say about Michelangelo’s David (well, that might be pushing it), just take away what you don’t need. Or the need is for guitar and tin whistle that is “Irish sounding.” Got that, too! Each part can be separated and used on its own. (Don’t ask The Monkees to do that.)

Let’s say you are just you. This is an album you can love for itself alone. From the devastating “Belfast Street” to the high-energy “Where Has The Love Gone?,” the songs, voices and arrangements cast their own spell. One thinks of the great a cappella groups and traditions – the Hi-Lo’s, Singers Unlimited, Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, New York Voices…

Below is a brief description of what is available, track by track. Congratulations to Wahoo Do-Re for rediscovering and giving us this wonderful music!

Morgan Ames, Beverly Hills, CA

1. FIRST DAWN. And no kidding. Pure atmospheric chords reaching up and out, wordless, reminiscent of the great Brazilian Ivan Lins, the melody ending high and clear.

2. LONG ROAD. A Pan-African travelogue, with words culled from a Rand McNally road atlas, and a little percussion for luck. There are town names and there are just syllables that are fun to sing, such as “Jo no ni ke re re.”

3. QUESTIONS. Big questions, with a lot of rhythm and some hot chords. This song features a duet from the Joyce brothers, David and Bob, singing in unison two octaves apart. Don’t try this at home.

4. WHERE HAS THE LOVE GONE? It begins with another tight rhythmic duet between Bob Joyce and Randy Crenshaw, followed by a traditional R&B- flavored vocal by writer Carl Graves. Sampled drums underpin the track. Wouldn’t it be interesting to hear just a lead vocal and drums version? Hmm…

5. BELFAST STREET. There are two versions of this deeply moving song, one with rhythm section and one a cappella. It’s Irish, but it’s now. It’s many streets. “I used to care who was wrong or right, till my boy was killed on a Belfast street last night.” Beautiful vocal solos by Vatrena King and Lesley Paton.

6. LET’S DO SOMETHING NOW!. Once again, two versions of this, one with rhythm section and one a cappella. “What are we waiting for? Let’s do something now.” It has a gospel heart, and everybody has something to sing about.

7. BELFAST STREET. A cappella version (with tin whistle).

8. LET’S DO SOMETHING NOW!. Rhythm section version.

9. SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED. Wahoo Do-Re has big designs on Stevie Wonder’s classic, featuring Lesley Paton, obviously having fun.
