Another Realm, a World Music/Improvisation ensemble based in the Boston area, consists of five of the area’s most adventurous and creative musicians,
flutist Linda Chase, pianist and reed player Hankus Netsky, bassist Kim Cass, percussionist Tupac Mantilla and vocalist Rebecca Rubin. Together they explore a repertoire that includes pieces inspired by South American, Eastern European, Asian, and Jewish traditions, jazz standards, music of romantic and impressionst European composers, poetry-based improvisations,
and original compositions.
Hankus Netsky, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and ethomusicologist, is an instructor in jazz, contemporary improvisation, and Jewish music at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He is founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, an internationally renowned Yiddish music ensemble. Hankus has composed extensively for film, theater, and television, and collaborated with such artists as Itzhak Perlman, Robin Williams, Joel Grey, and Theodore Bikel. He has produced numerous CDs on the Rounder and Vanguard labels.
Linda Chase, flutist/composer/Berklee faculty member, teaches
composition, arranging, improvisation and interdisciplinary arts at Berklee College of Music. She was recently awarded the composer''s prize for the Kaki Aso composition competition, has composed for the American Repertory Theatre Institute in Cambridge, and also has been a featured composer/performer in concerts throughout the Boston area. One of her her recent works includes a musical journey of poetry by Jelaluddin Balkhi (Rumi) and music. She received her Masters degree in Music in contemporary improvisation from New England Conservatory where she studied with Ran Blake, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Expressive Arts from Evergreen State College in Washington.
Drummer and Percussionist Tupac Mantilla is a native of Columbia, where he
studied classical and traditional percussion and graduated with honors from
Javeriana University. He began performing at a very early age, and his work as a drummer and percussionist is widely recognized in the rock, jazz and studio scene. Since the age of 13, Tupac worked with the government as music teacher of orphaned
children, and in 2000 he produced, composed and arranged the album "Sueños" (Dreams), that came out as a result of his ten years of working with these kids. He has won a number of awards and solo competions, and since 1999 has given
rhythm, percussion, body-percussion, and rhythmic skills workshops throughout his country, based on the STOMP technique and the use of regular life objects as percussion instruments. He is the founder, composer and director of TEKEYE, the main experimental percussion group in Colombia, which has been constantly touring and playing for 6 years and has made many appearances in TV programs, advertisement campaigns, and percussion and theater international festivals. He has also toured with several prominent Columbian rock bands. He
is a graduate of the Contemporary Improvisation https://www.tradebit.com the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston (USA), where he studied with Rakalam Bob Mosses, Gary Chaffee, Danilo Perez, Jamey Haddad, Jerry Leake, John Hazilla, Dominique Eade, Michael Cain, Hankus Netsky and Ran Blake.
Bassist Kim Cass hails from Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine.
He has played with George Garzone, Varcon Ovsepian, Bill Mc Henry, and
Brendan Newell. He has studied at New England Conservatory wtih Ran
Blake, Allan Chase, John Mc Neil, and John Lockwood. Kim enjoys many
types of music and outdoor activities of all sorts.
