TROPIGROOVE
TROPIGROOVE is a dynamic musical duo consisting of live sax, and guitar cleverly wrapped around arranged sequenced rhythms
The group was formed in 2000 in Tampa and plays a variety of Caribbean rhythms primarily Compas and Voodoo out of Haiti, also Reggae from Jamaica, Salsa from Cuba, Soca from the Caribbean And popular standards rearranged to Compas rhythm. You have to hear it.
Tropigroove first live performance was at Sunken Garden on May 4, 2001 at a private party for the New Mayor of St. Petersburg. It was a big success. People really like the tropical beat. Tropigroove official debut however took place at saffron’s restaurant for Mother’s Day, 2001. It was a riot. The place was packed to overflow. The music resonated in people’s heart and soul. The band continued to play that summer at Saffron and at other private parties. Dr Morency and Joel are committed to keep Tropigroove alive and to make a lot of music together. So far they have succeeded .
THE PLAYERS
YVES MORENCY MD Alto sax, and Tenor Sax, composer
Dr. Morency is a local Family physician who has played the Sax since High School. He played with two bands: The DIPLOMATS and SUNSHA while in College in Boston in the 1970’s. After a hiatus in the 80’s, he started freelanced in the 90’s until the year 2000 when he met Joel Girardin to form Tropigroove.
JOEL GIRARDIN Band leader, Guitar, Sequencer, arranger
Joel is an accomplished musician. He came to the United States from Haiti at the age of 15. He studied Guitar, Keyboard and music programming at the Musician Institute in Hollywood, Ca. He co-founded a Haitian Compas Band called FOX. He also played with the FORMULA ONE Band, which experimented with diverse styles of music such as Reggae, Soca, Salsa and Compas
In 2000 Joel moved to Tampa where he formed two musical groups: TROPIGROOVE and IMAJ. He also freelances with other bands in Orlando and Miami from time to time.
Joel is passionate about music. His desire is to produce music everyone will want to dance to.
