Details:
This may be Mellish’s debut for most of the world, but for the small venue/bar scene of New York City - The Mercury Lounge, Arlene Grocery, CBGBs, The Bitter End…- Mellish has been offering their refreshing and intelligent folk-rock-pop insights for many years. Like Neil Young and Ray Lamontagne, Mellish is soulful and identifiable. Cellist Dave Eggar, who has recorded with groups like Coldplay and The Who and played on Lamontagne’s 2006 Till the Sun Turns Black, plays on five Wiser Eye tracks. Eggar adds a gentle, haunting intensity to the album. There are echoes of Pearl Jam’s ferocity here, as well as the open-eyed baritone of Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen. This album is cinematic, bluesy and oak-fierce. In the hard driving purges and waltzing anthems, the listener will hear respectful nods to their elders, and yet it will be subtle and uniquely Mellish. The arc of Wiser Eye runs from frowning fish lines of longing to the sweet colorful spectacle of illumination. It is both the promising bend of a rainbow and the slant of a birch tree with the wintry weight leaning her, temporarily, down to earth. It covers questions and losses - it challenges in its fiery moments and whispers possibilities to an audience who has come to listen.
