Round Three. Where was I.
Not Hit Not Even Close #27 - YOU BITCH
I wrote this about a certain "A & R" employee at CBS publishing, where I was writing in the 80''s. Even the background guys singing "you know I love ya baby" is like the record execs on the phone, in the halls, in the cabs, ow. Hard times, good times, you know I love ya baby.
YOU BITCH Mark Radice 1987 (?)
I don''t know what I did to end up here
But I do not think I like this mess I''m in
Could be the understatement of the year
And I know i shouldn''t take it on the chin
You say our love is precious
But I know that you just like the way it sounds
You swear forever you''ll be mine
If that''s the case then one of us
Will soon be makin'' headlines
You know I love ya baby You know I love ya baby
All always make you happy you know I will you bitch.
You know I love you baby, You know I love you baby
I''ll always make you happy You know I will.
You''re livin'' in the lap of luxury
But you always want your hands on somethin'' new
When you get every single drop from me
It still somehow won''t be enough for you
And you whine and you whine
And I wine and dine you till I hit the floor
I want this and I want that
And I want this and I want that and this some more
You bitch.
You know I love you baby, You know I love you baby
I''ll always make you happy You know I will.
You know I love you baby, you know I lloovve you baby
You know I will
You''re livin'' in the lap of luxury
But you always want your hands on somethin'' new
When you get every single drop from me
It still somehow won''t be enough for you
Now could I ever love you still?

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE #28 PLAYIN TWISTER ALONE - I was watching Letterman unless it was somebody else one night when Howie Mandell was on and the host asked him a question and his answer was, "hey, it beats playin'' twister alone", which for some reason I thought was hilarious.
I walked around for about a year saying I have to write a song called that and then I did. About killing my wife or girlfriend and then dancing while I''m babbling on the phone to the authorities with glee.
PLAYIN TWISTER ALONE Mark Radice 2004
Slept like a log thank God for bed.
Cain''t walk da dawg cuz da dawg iz dead.
And now my neighbor just waved and I waved back
Like I''m really glad to see beer belly
T-shirt wearin loser in my neighborhood
Watering his lawn
The cable''s out like I''m ever gonna pay it
I got the game out now and I play it
I spin the wheel and feel it when I say it
If you''re lookin for me you can find me
Playin Twister Alone
I think I''m gettin that attention defi-something
I think I''m getting that A D some letter
I think I''m gettin that attention defi-something
I can''t remember what it''s called
You shoulda seen her twistin and a twitchin
Her lyin eyes were dearly bewitchin
Out in the yard you kind find her in the ditch
And if you''re lookin for me you can find me
Playin twister alone
(that is unless I''m playin with my....fiddle!)
She never ever seemed to shut up ever
She never ever seemed to stop
I tried to kill her with a cashmere sweater
But she kept breathin out the top
That''s when I found the old game up in the attic
It was a miracle from hell hell hell hell
And when she shouted whatcha doin there mister?
Just before I kissed her it was her very last yell
You shoulda seen her twistin and a twitchin
Her lyin eyes were dearly bewitchin
Out in the yard you can find her in the ditch
And if you''re lookin for me you can find me
Playin Twister Alone.

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE #29 - LOVE BACK A LETTER yeah, I know, strange title. Back then when I was writing as many songs as I was, any title that sounded wrong was good enough for me. This one I cowrote with Jack Conrad, a good friend and fellow song crafting person with lots of really cool ideas and a just generally nice laid back time out there by the Hollywood sign in California. That was the life.
I think he''s the bass player on this track too and maybe some of the harmonies, other than that it''s all me me me on the instruments, even the total Stevie rippoff harmonica solos are somebody''s keyboard that I beat up until it gave me what I wanted....
I''m impressed with how well written these lyrics are, due to Jack and I bearing down on our lyric skills together. I remember laughing alot at some particular lines, "Tell her that there''s no other could ever make her mine And it''s still only a matter of time......" no matter how many times I said them, thay made absolutely no sense at all. Just laughed my ass off. Probably after 12 hours of writing words to to same damn song.
I think it still holds up today and I''m proud of it. Has a real Clapton/Derek and the Dominoes/Allmans feel to it to me, but Max, the remastering engineer, says it''s the Tubes just before the chorus. What can I say I''m a musical mutt.
All the tracks and all the vocals were recorded FAST one morning somewhere, for some reason I remember starting really early like at 8 and we had the whole thing done by noon, mixed and everything...like I said, those were the days.... Wait, I didn''t say that, I said "that was the life". Oh shut up.
This song, Jack? Really doesn''t deserve to be a not hit. Oh well.....we did our best buddy.
LOVE BACK A LETTER Jack Conrad/Mark Radice 1986 (?)
All alone livin'' on dreams miles away from my everything
Workin'' hard never givin'' up so far away from my true love
A wanderer''s destiny the endless highways and lonely sheets
I''ve read them all so many times I can recall every single line
She said she''s gonna miss my lovin
She thinks about me all of the time
Come back come on baby come back
To this sweet love of mine
I''m gonna write my love back a letter
Tell her everything''s alright
She sounds afraid that I would forget her
But she''s always on my mind
Tell her that there''s no other could ever make her mine
And it''s still only a matter of time.....
Another night another town lightin'' it up when the sun goes down
Partied out tired of bein'' alone dreamin'' about that little girl back home....
Somethin'' inside me wants to get out and fly
Livin without you is a lie
Candles and paper melt into the night
To the one I love I write....
I''m gonna write my
Love back a letter.

Not Hit Not Even Close #30 - Just Another Memory - Like I said, back in the 80''s when I was spittin'' out songs left and right like some sort of rabid lunatic poet on crack, CBS took notice of my inability to stop, and rather than send me, or any of my songs to artists that were already established, they opted to concentrate on the songs they already had that were hits and let me, and mine, collect dust.
Until one day I had a little meeting. "From now on, stop sending me to fix band''s songs who I never heard of."
Once they got that straight the covers started rolling in. We started to get papers from somewhere that listed who was looking for songs. I saw Cheap Trick I was like whoa call them.
I would have to say that looking back now, my favorite collaborating ever was with Cheap Trick. We met when they were opening up for some band I was playing keyboards for at the time Aerosmith (who?) and it turned out that Rick was looking for someone to mash brains with too.
A true dream come true for me. I wrote my ASS off in the two months that I spent with those guys.
In two months I wrote 35 songs, 16 of them we cowrote as a band, and they used 8 of them on "Standing On The Edge", including the ALMOST HIT "Tonight It''s You". Even wrote an "Olympic" song just me and Rick Neilson, called "Go For The Gold" that should have been EVERYWHERE.
This particular "Just Another Memory" song I wrote myself, but totally with Robin Zander in mind as the vocalist, and what better way to get it to him than to spend two weeks living literally in his basement with tape machines.
Alas (who am I freakin'' Shaekespear all of a sudden?) the band wasn''t too keen on recording anything that they weren''t a part of in the publishing department...then.
Of course now looking back they have since covered every other songwriter but me and Dolly Parton.
I can''t help but wonder if this would have been an actual HIT if they just did it. Like even now. Hint hint.
JUST ANOTHER MEMORY Mark Radice 1984
Half the night for your love
I''ve been waitin round long enough
I can''t believe you''re just another why should I care
Lighten up some reason must be there
You wouldn''t stand me up you wouldn''t dare
Or am I already just another memory?
Somethin''s not right and I don''t know why
Covered with doubt in the cold dark night
I know it don''t show but I''m truly concerned
And I just can''t give it up
If that''s the one thing I''ve learned
You''ve got to tell me tell me tell me the truth
Am I still apart of your life or am I
Just another memory to you?
Lookin out from inside it''s been like this since afternoon
My future is caught without an umbrella
The rain will come soon
Lookin down starin at my shoes
I throw my hear around but what''s the use
Can''t believe that we were all for nothing.
Somethin''s not right and I don''t know why
Covered with doubt in the cold dark night
I know it don''t show but I''m truly concerned
And I just can''t give it up if that''s the one thing I''ve learned
You''ve got to tell me tell me tell me the truth
Am I still apart of your life or am I
Just another memory to you?

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE #31 - MOTHER EARTH - Oh, I don''t know. This was one of the many many many recorded at Red Rock Studios out in Brodheadsville Pennsylvania back in the mid 80''s. Turns out I was environmentally aware 23 years ago when it wasn''t so, um...expected of us.
A vision I had about the planet talking to me? Was there no END to the depths I''d plume (plume?) just for something,... ANYthing to write about so I could play all the fun instruments again? With the exception of Kent Heckman, owner/engineer of Redrock, who did a wicked slide solo just like that Jackie Blue song. But with different notes. Tell THAT to Vanilla Ice.
MOTHER EARTH Mark Radice
So long still undecided could it be so wrong?
We are right on the wings of a new era
Goin'' under we''ve crossed the limit
But the wind will blow
Heed what this future brings
As the minutes rip the clock to shreds
I tried to fight the sun
But I didn''t feel I was getting very much
Undone
I was added to the flowerbeds
And wishing for somewhere to run
When all of a sudden we were the ones
"A World for Life Leave it the way you found it"
Still clear or was I dreaming has it been so long?
Stranded without a birth of discovery
She was right there silently screaming
It was in a song when I heard from Mother Earth
She said
"Leave it the way you found it
Don''t crowd around it
Look at the way you''ve bound it
Leave it the way you found it"
She said to me
"I gotta get some feelin'' I need the healin''
At least will you think about it?
Leave it the way you found it...."
As the minutes rip the clock to shreds
I tried to fight the sun
But I didn''t feel like I was getting anything
Undone
I was added to the flowerbeds
And wishing for somewhere to run
When all of a sudden the next thing I know....
"A World for Life Leave it the way you found it"
Still clear or was I dreaming has it been so long?
Stranded without a birth of discovery
She was right there silently screaming
It was in a song when I heard from Mother Earth.

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE #32 - Take Good Care Of Love - Another Redrock Recording. At first you think it''s "Killer Queen" by Queen but then it isn''t. Actually it''s almost the same intro as "Not As Easy As Before", which is coming up on "Not Hits Not Even Close Volume 104", coming out at the end of this month.....and THEN "Killer Queen" came out after THAT so in the words of ACDC, who made who?
This really felt like a single to me, everything fell into place like songs often did in those days of too much wine and everything else. Toyed with Jon Anderson-ish lyrics that sound good with the music but if you look at them you say, "What?"
TAKE GOOD CARE OF LOVE Mark Radice
Looks like another day
Wonderin what the World will bring this morning
Throwing it all away
Feeling like the rain outside I''m falling
Down and down we go we are spiraling
Heaven only knows where this will lead
Will we go on remembering
How it felt, how it felt to need?
Well I better take good care of love
I better hold on carefully
I better take good care of love
Cause look what your love has given me....
Looks like we''re on our way
Back on track again just like the old days
Now that it''s here to stay
Underneath the stars we are still shining
Down and down we go we are spiraling
Heaven only knows what this could mean
Well I better take good care of love
I better hold on carefully
I better take good care of love
Cause look what your love has given me....
Dangerous nights I nearly set you free
To move on through
Now I know that it has to be
From me to you.
Looks like another day
Wonderin what the World will bring this morning.

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE #33 - One Of Those Days - Phil Ramone, yes this guy --- >>> https://www.tradebit.com called me up and asked me if I had anything for "Ringo".
As I always did, I said "sure, let me go find it!" and then I wrote one. Then I booked some small studio in Pennsylvania and by dark it was done.
Phil''s instructions were that the melody be hooky, simple, and within a five-note range that he said Ringo only sang in. I was like five note range?
What with MTV being the "new" medium to sell artists, I wrote the lyrics envisioning a funny Ringo video that would take over the world with it''s charm and wit.
So I wrote it, recorded it, and sent it the next day, and like 991 out of every thousand? I never heard anything ever about it ever again.
ONE OF THOSE DAYS Mark Radice
Well I woke up this morning with that nasty old cough
Went to pick up my briefcase and the handle fell off
I tried to get out of here I didn''t get far
Cause when I went for my keys I found ''em locked in the car....
Didn''t get any better as the day went along
And just when I thought that nothin'' else could go wrong
I answered the phone it was my second ex-wife I said
The check''s in the mail can I get on with my life?
One of those days
I''m having one of those days
And I can''t find the exit outta this place
But I''ve gotten through a ton of these days
Like someone''s got it in for me but I don''t know who
And it doesn''t seem likely I''ll be sleeping with you
Do you have to keep breathin'' in and out all day?
It was fun while it lasted but it wasted away
One of those days
I''m having one of those days
It''s a mess when I guess like a mouse in a maze
It''s just one of those days
When everything is all outta whack I''ll attack
And when tomorrow comes tomorrow I''ll be back on track
Seems it''s always the same like I can''t ever win
And just when I''m over it it happens again
But what can I do when it''s all said and done
It''s just the luck of the draw that I''d be the one....
Having one of those days.

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE # 34 - SUMMER''S DAUGHTER - This is the, um....daughter of "Mother Earth"....Alot of times these songs came in pairs. Sometimes it was 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 in one day. Funny thing is I always knew when I was done. Like I''d try to start another one and either abslolutely nothing would sound right or it would seem to be breezing by me so quickly that I couldn''t get all the ideas down at once. The "record" was 16 songs in Nutley up in the loft of the apartmeant across from the Burger King, all in one day.
What was I talking about oh yeah "Summer''s Daughter" I think I was channeling either Peter Gabriel or Men Without Hats. As far as the lyrics I just simply have no idea what the hell I am talking about. But they sound cool by the time I get to "twigs".
SUMMER''S DAUGHTER Mark Radice
I feel the cold breeze rollin I don''t know what I''m gonna do
With all these rusted memories of me and you
For just a moment stolen in endless solitude
We had our sunny days we let the winter melt away from view
So bring me generous water strong tall tide
Furious fire twigs and twine
Got to bring together one design
Summer''s daughter will rise and shine
I see the crystals formin they''ve all been sent to take me to
Those lean and lazy yesterdays of greena and blue
I hear the sirens comin'' my runnin'' days are through
Out in the fields of sand I''ll catch my breath
And wait for you to bring me
Generous water strong tall tide
Furious fire twigs and twine
Got to bring together one design
Summer''s daughter will rise and shine

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE #35 - SILENT PARTNERS - A recurring theme of mine always seemed to be losing my mind, or not having all of it, or it being twisted in some way, from "It''s A Beautiful Day For A Breakdown" on "Store In A Cool Dry Place", to "Things Just Ain''t The Same Without You" on Volume 138, this "Silent Partners" one carries on the tradition. A song about people with multiple personalities who do things because voices tell them to. The voices are the silent partners. Get it?
One of my closest friends growing up was Jim Redmond, who married another friend of mine, Lucy, so I stuck their names in the song because I was the writer and since I am then
I say why the heck not. See? I just said it.
Recorded in that 8-Track studio (yes with actual TAPE) they stuck us in at CBS back in the 80''s, just me, David Dale (the engineer) and a 12 pack of Heinekens of which Dave
probably had one of a week.....we use to do about 2 to 5 a week like these, I''d come in at 10am with something I wrote the night before, record it, mix it, out by 6, bam, new song.
Poor Dave had to watch me get smashed and go into manic record mode but I think he just focused on what was coming in through the board and tried not to look at the actual weirdness of it all. It was a job.
I envisioned Michael McDonald singing this with KC and the Sunshine Band, and now? You can too.
SILENT PARTNERS Mark Radice
Lucy had her leather on and her diamond rings
She''s a nightmare from the 60''s....she''s alot of things
Dancin'' with the bad boys lookin'' proud and tough
But it isn''t what she wanted
No it''s never enough
So she went back home and she turned on the tube and fell into a movie.....
And she dreamed and dreamed she was the girl
The girl on the screen
And she couldn''t get over how real
How real it seemed
Until she fell, fell asleep....
Silent Partners one and the same
Different people under one name
Silent Partners one and the same
Different people
Silent Partners one and the same
Different people under one name
Don''t know what all the screamin''s about
Silent Partners
Jimmy never meant no harm but knew what pain was about
And one night when it got too warm he had to let it out
Found his lover one night in another man''s bed
Brought along a 45 pointed right at her head
And the silent partners well they sang in his ears
"The pain will soon be over....mm"
Silent Partners one and the same
Different people under one name
Silent Partners one and the same
Different people
Don''t know what all the screamin''s about
Silent Partners
Silent Partners dancing out of time
Chasing the sky for a reason to live in our minds
Silent partners always try to find
A logical explanation for the terror that hides behind and he dreamed....
And dreamed his heart was full his hands were clean
And he couldn''t get over how real it seemed
They''re always heard and never seen....

NOT HIT NOT EVEN CLOSE #36 - THIS DREAM IS DONE - One of the first songs I ever wrote using the Ensoniq keyboard, at that time a VS-23 or something. My way too pretty way too rich girfriend friend Stacy Lee, upon hearing what the keyboard was called, said to me, "That''s too hard. Why don''t you just give it a name or something...like Fred."
And from that day on the legacy began: Fred, Sid, Ted, Todd, TJ, Bob and Steven. The TS-10 family. You could almost call them septuplets. But you won''t.
Anyway, so I was so new at programming sequences at this point that when things went horribly wrong, as in the intro of this song, well I just liked it way even more, and kept everything. I didn''t care WHERE the drum shots were landing, hey it was PLAYING BACK. Programming at the house meant I could now do 90% of the actual work of creating a track at the house, leaving only 10% at the studio like a better
vocal mike, a real piano, and a real mix with all kindza useless effects that made us go wow.
I owned a house in Stroudsburg, PA for 7 years, "right off of Rt. 80" as it says in Not Hit Not Even Close #8 on Volume 155 (ya followin'' me?) and it was in foreclosure because I had no idea what I was doing and still don''t, so the lyrics
are kinda me saying goodbye to the house, and Stacy, who knew I was sort of in love with her because everybody was, and even Pennsylvania itself.
It was time to move on. OK the first person that gets Aaron Neville to record this gets 15% of the publishing I''ll draw up the contract right now, because then? Then we could get the 80 Piece Orchestra.
THIS DREAM IS DONE Mark Radice
I''ve been livin'' on the wind for far too long
Chasin'' after this dream
And the summer will be comin'' up
Faster than the speed of listening
Yeah the cold frost is movin in from the west
I can hear it callin'' my name
And it won''t be long till it''s all long gone
And it''s time to stake my claim and I''m gonna move....
I will be moving on
Cause this dream is done.
I''m tellin'' you I''ve given it a lot of thought
And I''ve always put you there
But the more I waited
The more I hated my future in the air
I was lookin'' for a way to find you
Hopin'' I could see a sign
Till I finally had to come to the realisation
That your love would never be mine so I''m gonna move....
I will be moving on cause this dream is done.
You''re on my mind but I''m feeling a stranger
I can''t be the same now with everything changing around me
I was calling you home but your heart had to fly
Now I can''t go on wondering why
You can''t say I didn''t try.
I will be moving on ooo I got to move....
