While touring nationally as a backup singer and violinist for Catie Curtis (and appearing regionally with Sara Thomsen), Rachael Kilgour’s own songs were met with overwhelming approval from audiences. Breaking from her pursuit of a music degree, she focused on the album that was bubbling forth—and this young artist draws from a soulful and gritty wellspring. Bold, lyrical, passionate, Kilgour sings about love, heartache, and social justice with determination and charm. She is tender on “Bluebird,” a beautiful lullaby that features her 7-year-old daughter; jilted but forceful on “Tell Me Washington”; haunting and vulnerable on “Sun’s Going Down.” Unafraid of sincerity and eschewing self-absorption in her songs, Kilgour writes about what matters. She seamlessly moves from sweet to commanding, determined to joyful, intimate to full-on belting it out that says, “yeah, this is what the human voice was made for.”
Kilgour (vocals, guitar and violin) is bolstered by the talents of bassist Matt Mobley, percussionist Dan Westerlund, and harmonies from Adeline Wright and Haley Bonar. Twin Cities guitarist Jake Hanson provides textured ambiance and melodic lines. Additional players include Kathy Mctavish, cello, and Lance Rhicard, dobro. Produced by Haley Bonar. Recorded and mixed (with Bonar) by Eric Swanson.
