The debut self-titled EP from Gospel Claws (Tempe, AZ) takes a page from early rock music in both sound and songwriting, with an indie-folk sensibility and a little gospel soul, as their name implies. And with lyrics like “You want to impress your supervisor / show him what you’ve got”, you can tell there’s a little humor and irony at play as well. Imagine something between The Walkmen and The Smiths with lyrics by Jarvis Cocker, and you’d have a pretty good idea of Gospel Claws.
Lead vocalist and songwriter, Joel Marquard was a founding member of indie-pop darlings, Dear and the Headlights (Equal Vision), but left the band in the fall of 2007. He did not leave with the intention of forming another band, but he also knew he could not stop writing and creating music. He slowly assembled a lineup of friends that make up Gospel Claws, including Sloan Walters, who shares some of the writing and lead vocal responsibilities, John Mulhern on bass, Wesley Hilsabeck on Guitar and Keys, and Scott Hall on drums (and an occasional guitar solo).
