Details:
The Ship was formed in March of 1971 to perform five shows of a nearly hour-long folk opera of the same name, written by two of its members. The initial performances took place in a chapel above a popular folk music coffeehouse on the University of Illinois campus. The enthusiastic response of the local audiences convinced the group to continue playing the piece and to take it on the road to other college campuses. The work was retired after being recorded on an album for Elektra Records and a couple years of live performances. Between 1971 and 1977, the group recorded one additional album, countless individual songs and many commercial jingles, while performing in clubs, concert halls and on college campuses throughout the midwest. During its six-year history, The Ship included nine different musicians.
After performing the folk opera over and over for more than two years, it was a welcome relief for the five original members of The Ship to move on to other songs. This is a collection of previously unreleased studio recordings made between 1971 and 1973. You hear the folk music roots and the individual songwriting styles of the group’s various members, yet still there is the overall group sound that originally made The Ship popular. The tape masters for these songs sat for 35 years in a box in a basement before being resurrected and digitized. They are the efforts of a young band finding its way in a tough business and a group of young musicians finding their own sound. In April of 2008, the band members reunited to play a reunion concert in the same coffehouse chapel where it all started and they now work together on a limited basis when time and schedules allow.
