Miss Lana Rebel; The long story…

I spent my twenties playing bass in a sludgy, noisy, instrumental math-metal band called Last of the Juanitas. At some point, during that time, I started teaching myself guitar by playing along to old country records. Hank Williams. Johnny Cash. Willie Nelson. Lefty Frizzell. I began writing my own songs, and the Juanitas boys encouraged me to start up a country band. They backed me up and we recorded a demo. We called this group Juanita Family and Friends. Members changed, but from about 2004-2007 we had a pretty solid lineup. We released a CD and toured the States. Lots.
We spent a bunch of time down in Austin, Texas soaking up the country music scene. During SXSW, we were playing out on the street (no jobs, and getting a lil’ hungry. But that’s another story…) and met the BBC’s Radio 1 DJ, Huw Stephens. I guess he liked it, cause he invited us over for a session in the legendary Maida Vale Studios. We headed to London on all the borrowed money we could muster up, and spent the next few weeks tooling around the UK and Ireland. After the session aired, the Juanita Family acquired even more BBC attention, and our album has enjoyed acclaim by Ralph MacLean on BBC Radio Ulster, and spins on Bob Harris Country for BBC Radio 2. Back in the States, the album continues to be a favorite on local jukeboxes, was featured on All Songs Considered for NPR, and was chosen as best Northwest Country by KBCS’ Christine Linde. Our little crew did pretty well, considering we did it on our own. I’m certainly proud of it all.
After a while, the Juanita Family disbanded, and now I play around town with a backing band we call the Broken Promises. I recorded my first solo album, “All I Need” down in San Diego at Stereo Disguise Laboratories. That’s Pall Jenkins of Blackheart Procession fame behind the knobs. My buddies from the outlaw band Bartender’s Bible backed me up. We got a real gut string stand up bass, a Fender Rhodes, a dobro and even a saw on that thing. Pall and I worked together on the production, and I really like the way it came out. One of the tracks has been featured on the Country Girl compilation from London’s Loose Records.
