Marc Cary’s Focus Trio, formed in 2000, has been blessed to create a sound that transcends the musical and cultural boundaries of “jazz.” Within the Focus Trio we have a rich body of history and culture that helps shape the core sound that we have; as a trio we are one.
I am very proud to present Marc Cary’s Focus Trio: LIVE 2008 to the world, and to the community of music lovers who enjoy exploration through improvisation. We have a vast repertoire of music, and we use improvisation as a means of revealing the meanings of our songs and making connections among them. We picked these songs out of many because of the vibrations and energy they exude and generate. This album documents two special performances in California: one at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco, and another at the Healdsburg Jazz Festival in Sonoma Valley.
The Red Poppy Art House is an intimate room with no formal stage—the audience is a foot away from the performers, so close that it feels as if we can read one another’s thoughts. At Healdsburg we performed at the Barn Diva, a well-named outdoor amphitheater, to audiences that were eager to experience our music again (it was our fourth year in a row performing at the festival). At both venues, for different reasons, the music was extremely charged by those who received it. They became a part of the music, and our music became a part of them.
Although recordings cannot reproduce every aspect of a live performance, this document captures the essence of these very special performances. I’ve always been particularly inspired by recordings of live performances because they tell all—the magic, the mistakes and recoveries—in a word, the humanity of the music. To give you an even fuller picture, we have also included four video clips from these shows in Marc Cary’s Focus Trio: LIVE 2008.
Thank you to our fans and supporters for waiting patiently for this new release. This is the first of a series of live recordings that will be presented—we hope you enjoy this music and continue to support the Focus Trio, and live music.
- Marc Cary
“His wonderfully in-sync trio is rounded out by David Ewell on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums and tablas.
The group ''s playing is so cohesive, [it] feels like a song-cycle”
- Ron Netsky (Rochester City Newspaper 8.23.06)
“[Cary’s] work with artists including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, vibraphonist Stefon Harris and singer Abbey Lincoln suggests
that he’s well-respected by his peers and considered
capable of just about anything.” - All About Jazz
