Details:
River City Extension was started by Toms River, NJ singer/songwriter Joe Michelini in August of 2007. This band wasn''t started with the same purpose of every other band; Joe started his band because he was bored. Not "too much time on your hands" bored, but bored with music and the songs he was hearing on the radio, top 10 charts, etc. That fall he hooked up with old childhood friend and cellist Jennifer Fantaccione, followed very quickly by bassist Michael Costaney. For a while it was the three of them, playing shows at such places as The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, and cafe''s across the tri-state area. The band picked up attention of local papers and radio stations, as they started to build a name for themselves around Central Jersey. However the times were changing, and Joe''s songs were slowly calling for a bigger band. Soon they recruited percussionist Nick Cucci (formerly of Blue Tom and Paper The Operator), and trumpet player Dan Melius (formerly of The Superspecs), while Mike Costaney (former bassist) hopped onto drums. In July of next year the band was invited to open for newgrass legends "The Avett Brothers" in Asbury Park NJ, who later called River City''s show "phenomenal". This was followed up by an invitation to play CMJ Festival ''08 in NYC. By now, it was time for a legitimate record. River City Extension started recording their debut EP as a band, "NauticalSabbatical" with Pat Noon of eight16recording in their hometown of Toms River. As the album progressed, the members of the band started to realize their live performance was in need of a bigger sound. They have recently taken on Matt Goold on banjo and mandolin (formerly of Passengers And Their Baggage), as well as Matt Lonnergan on bass (of George Washington''s Revenge). With the help of many others, the record was finished and mastered by Alan Douches at the end of 2008, and is planned to be released on January 31st, 2009 at The Fire in Philadelphia.
