With Songs of the Earth, Planning The Rebellion have written and recorded an album that reflects the delicate moods of the human condition. Brothers Scott and Robert Cerny have abandoned their electronica roots to employ the djembe along with other African drums in combination with layered acoustic guitars and instruments ranging from the cello to the gong. The opening track of the album begins with a faint rainstick, fading into a repeating piano motif with guitar accompaniment, which expands into a full drum choir accompanied by sounds that resemble the noises of a rainforest. The earthy thump of the djembes, congas, and bongos represent a return to unbridled tribalism amidst an ever-changing, globalizing world. While much of the instrumentation on their album is thick, the core of the duo is their songwriting, which rests on the foundation of a simple acoustic guitar and voice. Songs of the Earth represents a true, genuine longing for a return to worldly, authentic music that seems all but abandoned in the mainstream music culture of today.
