Details:
This recording by trumpeter Akira Sato consists of nine original compositions, five of which are quintet pieces featuring New York baritone saxophonist Frank Basile. The rhythm section is made up of musicians who are all mainstays in the Dallas jazz community: pianist Brad Williams, bassist Buddy Mohmed, and drummer Andrew Griffith.
The concept behind the album is to feature the group rather than the individual. It captures the nuances of a live performance with ample solo space for all. Compositional influences stem from the music of Wayne Shorter, Tom Harrell, Kenny Wheeler, and Thad Jones. The music was captured on July 21 and 23, 2008.
Akira Sato has been an active musician in the Dallas area for over a decade. Growing up in Vancouver, Canada, he moved to Texas to attend the University of North Texas where he was a member of the One O’Clock Lab Band. Currently, he is a faculty member at both UNT, where he teaches jazz arranging, and Southern Methodist University, where he directs the jazz ensemble.
