Details:
Candy were originally formed in Kuching Malaysia, on the island of Borneo in 1992.
In those days it wasn''t so much that girls shouldn''t play guitars, more that no-one even considered it a possibility. The cool guys would hang around strummin, but when Mary (lead guitarist) went to the jamming studio and wanted to play, they didn''t understand what was happening. However a few years later, with Mary''s sister Connie on drums, friends Pat and Nancy on vocals and bass the 4 piece all girl rock band was formed and playing gigs....and proving they really could play.
They found fame with their first album entitled ''''CANDY'''' which went platinum in 1997. Featuring the hit single “Akkan Ku Tunggu” - (I will wait for you) which people still sing behind the girls as they walk down the street.
Candy were then entered into the Malaysian Book Of Records as the first all female rock band in Malaysia. They were nominated as '''' Best New Artiste'''' in the Malaysian Music awards in 1998.
Candy have toured West Malaysia, Sarawak, Sabah, Singapore and Indonesia, and have been featured often on the radio and TV. They are hoping to repeat these tours and widen their appeal internationally now that their new album “Absolute” is released.
They wrote 3 songs of the songs for their second album ''''HOT'''' which was released in 1998 and was all in Malay.
Having played some shows but not released an album for some time, they decided to take charge and produce their third album "Absolute" themselves, they wrote 8 of the 10 songs, 6 being in English with 4 in their native Malay.
"Kerana Dia" is an easy to listen to commercial number, meaning “Because of You”
“Creep” is about a stalker. Good rock with heavy guitar.
"Terasing" would be a good film soundtrack for a horror movie - it is about a girl who is dead but doesn''t know it!
"Takkan Pernah" is a song likely to appeal to the Malay audience.
“I still want you” is a song about a young city guy who meets a girl from a remote village, they fall in love and he shows her the bright lights, but as she warms to the new life style he begins to get jealous, so she reassures him...listen to the words.
“The Chase (On-On)” is a song for the International running group the Hash House Harriers, for whom the girls have performed and with whom they have run (albeit slowly!!), the lyrics are written by a Hasher.
