Details:
Fatima, a NYC based singer, and songwriter, was born in West Berlin to a German mother and Sudanese father and grew up listening to live performances of the Berlin Philharmonic as well as traditional Arabic music. She started singing at the age of six, and at 22, eager to express her multicultural musical roots, Fatima booked a one-way ticket to New York to find likeminded musicians to collaborate with.
In New York, Fatima, who is multilingual, began writing, arranging and performing songs that combine several languages – sometimes within the same song – with classical European and Arabic-African elements. In 2003, Fatima released her five-song EP featuring three of her original compositions: Allah o’ Akbar, In the Lonely Hour and Fafa Morgana. In 2007 she recorded, and translated into German, French and Arabic, the song ‘Salt of the Earth’ on Rolling Stones’ saxophonist Tim Ries’ 2008 release CD ‘Stones World’ along with John Pattituci and longtime idol Lisa Fisher. Later that year, the New York City based big band IC Express recorded the song “Fafa Morgana”, which she co-wrote with pianist Mferghu.
Fatima has performed in the US, Canada, Germany, Sudan, South Korea, Dominica and Mexico. In 2003, Fatima was invited to perform traditional Sudanese songs and dances at the Save Darfur fundraiser at the Miller theatre, hosted by Ossie Davis, and until today continues to perform for this cause. In addition she wrote and recorded the song “Let’s find a way” with Robin Tomlin and Waleed Abdulhamid to raise awareness for children who were born with AIDS.
As a back-up singer and dancer, Fatima has performed for many African and Caribbean artists such as Nayanka Bell, Monique Seka, Soukous Stars, Tiken Jah Fakoly and Kojo Antwi in their individual native language, such as Twee, Fon, Yoruba, Djoula, Creole, Bengali, and Hindu.
