Having already carved out a niche for himself with his first two albums, Lionel O returns with the Nemo Nocturne EP. His trademark wit, whimsy, and whistling are still there, but there’s something else. He’s still making catchy lo-fi guitar-pop, but it’s more than that. Nemo Nocturne is a complex, contradictory record; it’s rough around the edges, but shows the work of an accomplished artist. Each song feels wholly different – from the Bowie-esque glam of “Angels” to the kazoo-infused bizarro-folk of “Vacation Rentals” – but it’s not a matter of inconsistency; instead, it shows Lionel O’s range. It’s an innocent and idealistic record, but without being too naïve. It’s a perfect winter record, but it’s still warm and inviting. More than anything, the Nemo Nocturne EP is chock full of Lionel O’s penchant for the bittersweet and surreal, and his own unique charm and humor. Overall, Nemo Nocturne EP is Lionel O’s most uncompromising and promising work to date.
