Details:
The Murphy Brothers are John and Danny Murphy. Born and raised in Columbus, Indiana, they began playing early - at ages 10 and 5 respectively. Danny started out on the ukelele and John on the guitar. Back then, they played at park shows, shopping mall openings, county fairs and regional contests.
They have always been interested in all musical styles - they listened to Procol Harem, Thelonius Monk, Hawaiian music, jazz, classical, Latin American, Peruvian and pretty much everything else, too. You name it - the brothers were always searching out and listening to new musical genres!
This love of music led them both to study it in college. John got his degree in Composition at the University of South Florida, while Danny studied Classical Guitar at Indiana University. After that, there were thousands of jobs at beach bars and hotels, bar mitzvahs and weddings, restaurants and conventions. The brothers performed together for half a dozen years in Florida before moving to Nashville in 1983.
After finding work as studio musicians, The Murphy Brothers released an album, Orbit, which showcased their wide range of musical styles. They went on to become one of Nashville''s most popular live acts, specializing in Irish music.
Always on the back burner were their own instrumental pieces, composed over their years of playing together. Finally, in 2001 the Brothers recorded Rubies live at Hummingbird Studios on Music Row in Nashville. The subtle dynamic nuances and extraordinary togetherness of their playing are the culmination of almost 40 years of pickin'' and grinnin'' together!
