Details:
I just finished my 4th CD titled “…So Many Roads”. As with the previous albums, this CD is my acoustical guitar and me singing bluesy originals that I’ve composed. Like so many artists, I’ve kept my “day job” to keep the wolf away from the door…and also like so many, my day time hours have been cut (3 days a week, was 6 days a week not long ago)…but like my song on the “Open Heart” CD … Papa Can’t Break Down or “My Song Ain’t Over Yet” on this latest CD. I’ve a beautiful wife, healthy-handsome son and I’m still eating…(in the north country, South Dakota, USA).
I originally started playing music as a drummer. My first drum set was used and the previous owner was a rodeo clown. That was a while ago. I’ve always loved music and the influences are wide (and varied). Growing up, I remember my Dad listening to John Prine, Johnny Cash, Jerry Jeff Walker, Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, The Mystic Cowboys, etc. (I played some bar gigs with my Uncle Dan – The Mystic Cowboy, drumming). I still enjoy these artists, plus so many others.
Of course, all the vast experiences of my life reflect in my composing. My Mom and Dad are divorced and remarried. Mom is on her 2nd marriage and Dad on his 3rd. This has left me blessed with their love and the love of many siblings. I’ve lived in many places, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, California, Missouri and back to South Dakota, which continues to give me wanderlust.
The following are the lyrics for this CD "So Many Roads"
***…So Many Roads…
Don’t forget where you came from
Don’t get lost on your long way home
You’ve seen a lot…You changed your heart
You’ve been down…so many roads…
Don’t forget the things you love so
You hold them close and then let them go
You had a lot…to give away
There’s nothing you…could ever own
…don’t stay gone too long
you’ll always have a place here
home is where the heart belongs
don’t be a stranger…
save me a place a the table
I’ll be home before the sun goes down
Good men get lost…in this old world
I been down…so many roads…
***Smell the Rose
I never let a dollar
Burn a hole in my pocket
I don’t worry bout tomorrow
I’m a smoke it if you get it…kind of guy
I won’t let it pass me by
I been livin in the moment
You never know how long you got it
I won’t wait around for nothing
Get off your ass if you want it…walk the walk
Well I’m sick of idle talk
I been up and down the mountain
I been lost upon this road
But I won’t waste a single morning
You never know how good you got it…till it goes
Well I’m here to smell the rose
***My Song Ain’t Over Yet
Some days its hard – to do what’s best
When the wheels keep turning – you don’t get nowhere
Yeah times get hard – and there’s none to spare
Wolfs at the door and baby he sleeps there
But I’m no worse for wear…I’ll persevere
Some days it’s cursed – some days it’s blessed
Sometimes it’s both – it’s anyone’s guess
The pages turn – they’ll never end
Everyday I’m gonna start again
My song ain’t over yet…I’ll make amends
When life gets long – and weekdays blend
The seasons change and we change with them
I think of you and the times we spent
I think of time as an endless thread
I’ll see you around the bend…we’ll meet again
***Midnight Symphony
I bought a drum from a rodeo clown
I put my head to the ground – I could hear a heartbeat
I played along with the cricket’s song
I heard it all around – a midnight symphony
…oh gather round my fire
leave your baggage at the door
well the flames are getting higher
and the moon is bright
oh let my spirit soar…
I woke up late and I could not sleep
For all the wind in the trees – I heard melodies
I sang along with the cottonwoods
I heard it all around – a midnight symphony
The moon was full and the river flowed
I felt it in my soul – the current spoke to me
I flowed along with the river’s song
I heard it all around – a midnight symphony
***Clean Getaway
I wore out a lot of horses
Left some good things by the road
I didn’t care where I was going
I was just lightening my load
I wore out a lot of welcome
A couple of days too long
I didn’t care where I was sleeping
Turn around and I’d be gone
…I was always passing through
I was never meant to stay
I tried so hard – to my heart be true
But it don’t always work that way
Clean getaway…
I lit out for the horizon
I felt the rambling in my bones
Something out there – just kept a calling
Never would leave me alone
I hope before the sunset passes
I find a place that feels like home
And somewhere still – a dream that’s lasted
One that I can call my own
***Lost Trail
I followed your scent
There into the trees
And the sun sank down
And darkness fell on me
I laid myself down
Beneath an old tree
And closed my eyes
And started to dream
I followed your trail
Through rivers and fields
Found a strand of your hair
Up in the black hills
I seen the path of wildfires
Trees had been stripped bare
And the sunset on the ocean
I could tell you’d been there
I braved the high winds
And many nights of rain
Jus to wake and find
Your footprint washed away
I seen a flower growing
In a field of stone
Felt a new day dawn
Knew I was not alone
***Wayside Blues
I gave her my ring
And she pawned it for booze
I had no cause to complain
Cause I drank some too
She must have left it in the night
She must have stumbled by the moon
Somewhere along the line
I hope she finds her way through
She must have came by the way of the blues
I woke up in the rain
On a dark afternoon
Had no one else to blame
And the sky was just a bruise
I guess times getting hard
Anyplace that you go
Somewhere along the line
Hope I find my way through
Guess I came by the way of the blues
***Lakota Girl
She’ll take off walking into the corn
Without a word…and she’ll be gone for days
But she always comes home and God only knows
She’s just made that way
She grew up runnin in the prairie sun
Her mama https://www.tradebit.com’d never stay one place
It was in her eyes when she was young...it’s in her soul
She’s just made that way
…she listens to the cottonwoods
she wanders in the wind
well I know my heart is hers
but I turn around…she’s gone again…
in the early morning she’ll come around
without a sound…and lay down next to me
well she always comes home and God only knows
she’s just made that way
***Fall into Place
I got a good thing going
And that’s enough for today
Ain’t got no rhyme or reason
Just let it fall into place
I got a tired old engine
On its last leg
Still gets me where I’m going
Just one more mile…is all I pray
I wanna stand and face my weakness
I wanna steal your pain
And when at last I fall to pieces
I’m gonna rise again
I wanna grow from failure
I wanna hold my faith
I’d like to say forever
But sometimes…it slips away
But I got a good thing going
And that’s enough for today
Ain’t got no rhyme or reason
Just let it fall into place
