The Back Gallery… Tales of women ancestors

Author and narrator JoAnn Jacinta Crichlow (née Tanker) – was born and raised on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. She spent her childhood in a rambling old home, in the loving fold of an extended family. There were three generations of women under this roof and the “The Back-Gallery” was a hub of family activity providing JoAnn with ample opportunity to witness the world of women. She came to appreciate the many gatherings of friends and neighbours, and the endless exchanges over morning coffee. The Back Gallery was a haven for shared joys and sorrows, laughter and tears, a place where the yesterdays were brought into perspective and the new tomorrows dreamed of. It was here that life was lived, problems solved, tears shed and prayers said.

These stories speak to the wonderful experiences of living and sharing life in the shelter, protection and security of the company of older women. They are not in any way intended to be unappreciative of the contributions of men as community leaders and caregivers in the family. Indeed, for delightful insight into the roles of men listen to “For the love of God – Santas in Trinidad and Tobago on JoAnn’s Christmas CD Come to the Light.
