Details:
Point In Time – Drori Mondlak’s latest release on Lilypad Music (LPM 619) is dedicated to the creative spirit that unleashes the imagination when musicians come together with the presence of heart and mind to afford each other that individual freedom to explore.
The musicians featured on this CD, have been collaborating on projects, performing and recording together for over ten years. This recording showcases these four virtuoso musicians coming together once again to create their unique group sound on Point In Time.
For this project Drori decided to record at legendary Avatar studios in New York City and chose James Farber – one of the great recording engineers to capture the music in the most natural way – live to two track. All musicians were situated in one room in a great acoustical setting that allowed for the greatest interaction between them and the blending of their instruments. James captured the natural beauty of the sound of these instrumentalists.
Seven out of eight compositions were written for this recording date and these musicians in mind. The emphasis was on writing strong melodies on top of harmonic complexity. The idea was to write tunes that would tell a story and move the spirit and to play them with a spirit of adventure and abandon.
The musicians:
Drori Mondlak –drummer and leader.
Karolina Strassmayer- alto saxophonie, flute
Cary DeNigris- guitar
Steve LaSpina –bass

A presence on the New York City jazz scene since the mid 1980s, he has now made Cologne, Germany his second home, in order to participate more fully in the European creative music scene. Drori''s touch, subtlety, feel and interactive approach to the music have brought him international critical acclaim on stages worldwide as well as performing and recording opportunities with many musicians, including: John Hicks, Bill Charlap, Chris Potter, Lew Tabackin, Bucky Pizzarelli, Ralph Lalama, Eric Person, Ron McClure, Phil Markowitz, Dave Stryker, Vic Juris, Fritz Pauer, Barbara Dennerlein, Tony Lakatos and many more.
Karolina Strassmayer - Voted Top Five Alto Saxophonist in the 2004 Downbeat Readers Poll, Karolina has obtained critical acclaim for her phenomenal musicianship since arriving in New York City from her native Austria. In the WDR Big Band, she has had the opportunity to perform with guest artists such as McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul and Joe Lovano.
Cary DeNigris - has been called "one of the most incredible guitarists on the jazz scene today with an astonishing facility and depth of soul to match" (Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times Magazine). With over a decade of critically acclaimed recordings and performances under his belt, DeNigris continues to hone his unique sound and writing style. FROM THE PRESS:
"Drori is a terrific drummer whom I have known for years. This great recording showcases his dynamic playing, musicality and sensitivity, as well as his great interaction with an all-star group. Congratulations, Drori!"
Danny Gottlieb -Drummer with Pat Metheny
“Mondlak exhibits an eloquent speech-like personality while he executes his multiple functions; he internalizes his drum kit completely. Much remindful of the deeply melodic orientations of drummers Shelly Manne, Joe Morello or Max Roach, Mondlak is natural and imaginative in his high regard and ability to represent melodic lines and contours, and illuminates this flow freely with the listener.”
Dr. Herb Wong, IAJE Journal, Jazz Perspectives
"Mondlak''s quartet is integrated, balanced and musical, with no show-off features for the drummer leader. Mondlak, saxophonist and flutist Karolina Strassmayer, guitarist Cary DeNigris and bassist Steve LaSpina solo with conviction. Except for Frank Foster''s "Simone," the pieces are by members of the quartet. The collection might have benefited from more of the grit of DeNigris''s "I''ve Paid Some Blues" and "No Name Blues" and Mondlak''s "The Prance," but if Mondlak''s aim was to create an atmosphere of thoughtful relaxation, he succeeded. Mondlak has a witty solo on Strassmayer''s "It Once Was a Waltz." LaSpina''s fluidity and strength are important to the success of this music. Strassmayer''s work shows why she is one of the most interesting alto saxophonists under forty. DeNigris''s and Mondlak''s like-mindedness contribute to the success of the venture."
Doug Ramsey, Arts Journal, Rifftides.
"Point In Time is very well recorded and the mood of relaxed concentration comes through. Drori Mondlak’s drumming is timely and sensitive, not overwhelming the ensemble but keeping it on track and pushing it forward, lifting the soloists.”
Howard Mandel, jazz journalist
"Drummer Drori Mondlak leads a swinging hard- boppish quartet on his Point In Time (Lilypad Music). Along with his long time partner Cary DeNigris on guitar, veteran bassist Steve LaSpina, and alto sax burner Karolina Strassmayer, Mondalk swings interactively in a loose, understated manner on his lyrical composition “Sweet Tooth” and on a faithful rendition of Frank Foster’s forceful 6/8 vehicle, “Simone.” Guitarist DeNigris, a monster player with a flowing, Holdsworthian legato approach to soloing, offers two beautiful ballads in “Brenna’s Morning” and the evocative “Without A View,” both of which Mondlak underscores with sensitive brushwork.
DeNigris also contributes the jaunty, funky “No Name Blues,” which features some tricky rhythmic twists and precise hits by Mondlak along the way, and the earthy, slow-burning “I’ve Paid Some Blues.” Elsewhere, the drummer-leader plays on Strassmayer’s delicately swinging “It Once Was a Waltz” and hooks up with guitarist DeNigris for the delightfully conversational duet, “The Prance.”
