Philadelphia singer-songwriter Phil Bennett says, “I come out of the singer-songwriter tradition of the late 1960’s and the 1970—artists like Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Laura Nyro, Tom Waits, and James Taylor. I am foremost a poet and a crafter of melodies. I also listen to a lot of contemporary music and I’m always expanding my styles-- jazz, blues, Brazilian bosa nova, as well as my acoustic folk roots.”
Bennett began his musical career in 1970, performing in folk and blues clubs in the Chicago area and on concert tours at college and universities campuses. He studied voice at Beloit College and Northwestern University and plays a range of instruments, including guitar, piano, dulcimer, and harp.
He says, “I write from a deep soul place, drawing from my life experience. I write about world travels, love and loss, joy and sorrow, youth and age. A memorable song—one that really hits you and stay with you—rises out of the mysterious well of unconscious creativity. You can’t make it happen artificially. You have to wait till the right words and music come together. When it touches you personally as an artist it can have power to touch others as well. The truly personal is also the truly universal."
He is accompanied on "Labyrinth" by Jim McKay on guitar, David Zopf on bass, and Scott Robinson on percussion.
