Hospice of the Finger Lakes Benefit CD
SAMMY Award winner’s new recording dedicated to his dad
2 time SAMMY award winner Kevin Dorsey‘s new CD Fore! is special for 2 reasons. It serves as a tribute to his dad Jim, an accomplished area golfer, who died in April 2007. In addition, the proceeds from it’s sale will benefit Hospice of the Finger Lakes.
“In February 2007, I had talked to my dad about doing a fundraiser for Hospice of the Finger Lakes. This is a great organization that my stepmother was a nurse for many years and my dad was a volunteer. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at that point. A few months later my dad died and the idea fell by the wayside.”
In the months that followed Kevin began playing a guitar that he and his stepmother Val had bought for his dad for Christmas a few years earlier. “Slowly but surely,” Dorsey says, “songs began to develop, different from anything I had written before. Instead of the jazz/world music influence of many of my compositions for my group, I was writing in more of a Celtic/Americana style, music that I have admired and listened to but never thought I had in me.”
Songs of joy, childhood, family, loss and the future took shape. “During the writing process,” Dorsey continues, “I remembered what I had discussed with my dad.” Having the CD dedicated to his dad and benefiting Hospice at the same time was a no brainer. “Most people have been touched by a hospice organization and know how vital they are to families during a very difficult time in their lives.”
Fore! also marks a departure from Dorsey’s previous CDs in that he plays many of the instruments on the recording. “The CD represents my continuing growth as a musician. As I was making demo recordings of the songs I realized that I had improved enough on several instruments that I wanted to try and play as much of the music as possible. However, I do know my limitations!”
The first person Kevin had to bring in was percussionist GD Bower. “We have been the rhythm section of my group for over 5 years. Not only is he a rock rhythmically but also has great ears for producing, and having him involved in my projects makes everything that much easier.”
Besides Bower, Kevin brought in such musical stalwarts as Loren Barrigar, Joe Davoli and of course members of the Kevin Dorsey Collective. “Once I realized this was going to be a solo project, I started looking for some of my favorite musicians. I’ve worked with Loren and Joe before but not with original music. I had to bring in guitarist John Magnante because my dad loved his playing. Joe Carello, saxophonist by trade, is also a great English horn player and I’ve been trying to use him on a project for years. And Amy Christian is an accomplished Cape Breton style fiddler who is still under the radar in this area... for now at least!”
Dorsey hopes that like his previous CDs, which has garnered press and airplay worldwide, is successful, but for very different reasons. “I’d like people to check out this recording not only because of the money it will raise for Hospice, but also because it’s my tribute to a wonderful human being that I was lucky enough to have as a father.”
