Details:
In the last few years, jazz music has enjoyed a growing popularity among the general public. Although its not the most sold, people seem more and more aware that is a place for this type of music. Jazz music has grown from unknown tunes played in small night clubs into a musical celebration that join people together all around the world. The next step is make jazz music become an every day style. That is what Sylvain Marcotte has been trying to accomplish for the last few years.

With a self-taught jazz formation, Sylvain introduces his first solo album titled « Inspiration », which should be released in early 1997. Sylvain is currently recording this album with careful attention to every detail. At the age of 30, he has been playing jazz for quite some time already with musicians such as Michel Donato, Paul Brochu, André Leroux, Guy Boivert, Camil Belisle and many others which you will find on the album. Your first opportunity to hear him must have been as part of the group « Triaz » with whom he recorded an album in 1990. Following the album, Triaz went on a year and a half long tour which started in Quebec and brought them to France and Belgium. In 1992, Triaz’ workloud lightened a bit but an album should be coming soon. Sylvain is using this free time to work on is own solo project.

On this album, Sylvain is recording compositions who are not of Triaz repertoire. Mostly acoustic, the compositions included on this album mirrors well the influence pianists such as Chick Corea, Lyle Mays, Keith Jarrett, as well as more legendary player’s like Bill Evans and Telenious Monk have had on his writing. The album includes only one track which was not written by Sylvain. The song Billie’s Bounce, a Charlie Parker tune, was recorded live during a concert given by Sylvain with Paul Brochu (drums), Guy Boivert (acoustic bass) and saxophone player Eric Alain a short time before the recording of the album. The spontanaety and exceptionnal peformances of each musician moved him to keep this track on the album.

After recording, Sylvain will begin rehersals for a show that will better reflect his personnal image. With a personnal technical playing which leaves no one indifferent, he presents a mostly acoustic show colored with a few synthesizer sounds. The repertoire consists of original pieces taken from the album Inspiration, a few Triaz songs plus a few jazz standards rearranged to fit the style of the band. For his1997 tour, Sylvain is adopting the traditionnal Quartet formula, accompanied by André Leroux on saxophone,Guy Boivert on the stand-up bass and Magella Cormier on drums. This band offers us a show based on the spontanaety and free expression of each musician, engaging the audience into the great adventure of jazz. Notably wild rythmic performances coupled with devestating melodic lines will make you lend an ear and hope that the show never ends. It is at this moment that music becomes a pleasure cruise for the public as well as for the musicians themselves. Each solo represents a constant risk taking mission, taking the audience’s breath away in a search to always take it a little further.

Creativity is a dominant and necessary part of every human being’s evolution. For Sylvain, composition and improvisation within jazz music is the best way of exploiting his creative faculties. Through this way of thinking, he than invites people to come see and hear his show so as to be transported into a world of spontaeous creation and discover that it is always possible to extend one’s boundaries.

While jazz music still remains mysterious for many first time listeners, it’s popularity is at the highest it’s ever been. With his show, Sylvain makes the audience realize that this style of music is not as complicated and unattainable as many would tend to think.

Hoping to make you discover new horizons...
