Details:
"Kurt, as is perceived quickly when listening to his performance, is very serious about what he does and he has an honorable message that reoccurs in many of his songs. Kurt does not follow the beaten path; he does not share in the "American Dream." Rooting his music in the theme of living a truly personal life, with personal goals and ambitions; Kurt accomplishes not only some well crafted lyricism, but a melody that accompanies his words like a glove." -Abrahm Neuser
Kurt Prond has been singing as long as he can remember, in a family saturated and defined by music. The Veale(Kurt mother’s maiden name) family was and is known throughout the Upper Peninsula--where Kurt was raised--for their excellence in music through several generations.
In high school, Kurt played first chair trumpet and sang in choir, but also began playing guitar. Listening to and learning Simon and Garfunkel tunes, he was soon playing and writing original music.
From 2002-2005 Kurt attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and graduated with a B.A. in Vocal Music in 2005. College years were rich in musical experience, leading college worship bands, starting a bluegrass band, “the birch bark bluegrass band” and continuing to write and perform in local Northfield venues. After graduating Kurt moved to Montana, to work on a backcountry trail crew for the U.S. Forest Service. After 6 months he moved back to Northfield to take a position as the Worship Director at Emmaus Baptist Church, where he organized and led music for the congregation every Sunday.
It was during those 2 years that Kurt joined with 3 other friends from St. Olaf--fellow songwriter Adam Pearce, bassist Stacy Griffin, and drummer Kyle Larson, and Kurt as the electric guitarist, to form the Pop/Rock band Away with the Stone. Away with the Stone released their self titled album in 2006, and performed in the Minneapolis region for a year and half.
In 2007 Kurt made a difficult decision to leave both his position at the church and his role in Away with the Stone to return to the mountains of Montana, and again work for the Forest Service, which he has done seasonally since.
The simple life of a Backcountry Ranger has deeply influenced Kurt’s lifestyle, as well as his music--Folk melodies accompanied by bold lyrics that dream of a simpler life in which we are no longer slaves to our own culture. His songs address difficult issues, his frustrations with the systems set in place by our society, and his frustrations at times with the Church, in spite of his own faith. His lyrics are provocative and challenging, yet awakening and hopeful.
In October 2007 Kurt moved to Portland, Oregon and has been pursuing songwriting, recording and performing as a career. In October 2008 he released his first solo album, titled “Prone to Wander” and went on a month long tour across the northern tier of the U.S. from Oregon to the Great Lakes, where he was raised. Back in Portland Kurt is continuing to play locally and touring to other regions of the U.S.
