"Turn off your mind, relax. . . . And let your imagination rip! This is definitely imagination-inspiring music."
Point of Departure is a retrospective of 10 or so years of experimentation and exploration. The domains, or styles, being explored have sometimes been called "minimalism," "ambient," "pulse" and "stochastic." I like to call it "Trans-Classical," or "Trance-Classical."
CLASSICAL
The classical (I use the term loosely here) methodology takes place in the detail of my music. It''s almost fractal in the way that I sustain the same level of detail no matter how deeply you listen. Just as in a Bach fugue, where every line is an exquisitely worked out piece of music in its own right, every sound in my music is crafted with intention.
I also have the benefit of electronics. I can determine many aspects of each sound with the same precision that I can place my notes. The unfolding of a drone has a life of its own, for example. A repeating tone will, by virtue of placement, timbre or volume, carve out it''s own musical space and not merely be a rhythmic element. Put this all together and you get a detailed texture, not unlike a Persian carpet or, as I mentioned above, a fractal.
In apparent contrast to the above, much of the music is created and discovered by the chance juxtapositions of sounds and patterns. As I''m the one who creates the algorithms and combinations, there''s no real conflict. I still ultimately provide the creative impetus. And while I don''t know exactly what results I''ll get, I can fine-tune the algorithms and sounds until I achieve what I want.
TRANS-CLASSICAL
This is Trans-Classical because I use a classical approach in composing my music and then transcend the style by creating hyper-real music with electronics and unrealistic orchestrations.
TRANCE-CLASSICAL
This is Trance-Classical because you will experience Trance-like states while listening to this music. The experience of listening to this music is like the experience of discovery as you look at an intricate design, or somebody''s eyes, or just about anything in nature.
POINT OF DEPARTURE
This is a Point of Departure for me. While completing this CD, I came face to face with myself. What I saw was a composer, musician, and artist. I hadn''t really faced that before. This, then, is the Point of Departure. And now is the Time.
