This outstanding record is the second solo effort from jazz guitarist/composer Baron Tymas. Every track is an adventure, with intriguing compositions, great solos, propulsive rhythms and plenty of action. The musicians are first class. Drummer Thomas Taylor graces every tune save the solo guitar track, “Insignificant Other.” Bassists Damon Brown and John Brown split duties on the remaining tunes. Jon Metzger’s provocative vibes work adds an essence to half the songs, and Ed Paolantonio’s piano swings persistently. Saxophone standouts Brian Horton and Brian Miller breathe fire into Tony Williams’ “Warrior,” while Ira Wiggins and Robert Trowers rock the boat on Teddy Edwards’ Cellar Dweller. Flutist Kofi Burbridge is striking on “The Maze,” one of the record’s eight Tymas originals.
