John Barcanic’s father once said, “He came from the womb playing music.” Born into a musical family (his father is a composer, his mother was a pianist), John can’t remember a time when his life wasn’t filled music. Beginning on drums, then moving to trumpet, and eventually piano, John has always loved playing and writing.
“I remember the first song I ever wrote,” he says. “It was for my high school variety show. It was one of those sappy ‘I’ll remember you forever’ songs about finding the true meaning of friendship.”
John’s music soon turned from sappy to more sophisticated as he studied jazz composition and performance at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. “I had the privilege of working with some really great musicians,” he says. “Some of these guys could hang with anyone you could name, but chose teaching as a way of passing on the craft to the next generation.” His own list of bandmates includes names like Mark Colby, Brad Goode, Greg Fishman, Russ Nolan, and Jon Chudoba.
A versatile composer, John’s music has been heard in European concert halls, Chicago jazz clubs, and South American churches. He himself has performed in countries throughout North and South America and Europe. Invariably audiences come away humming his songs.
“For some reason I’ve always thought of melody first. Even in compositions I know are going to be instrumental, the melody has to be hum-able. The tune is the foundation. All the arranging and instrumentation in the world can’t really make up for a bad melody. Ultimately, if it’s a good tune, someone should be able to just play it alone on the piano or guitar and have it work.”
Memorable melodies, interesting harmonies, and enough surprises to keep you on your toes, Hats is strong debut from John Barcanic.
