About Mary Mac

Mary Macs vocal talent and song writing have gone from strength to strength since 1985 when she started her career as vocalist and songwriter in Scotland''s all-female funk rock band. The band toured the UK extensively, and played venues such as the Marquee in London, supporting many big names including ‘The Average White Band’, and ‘Fish’. She also worked closely with Jessie Rae, singer songwriter kilted extraordinaire, who wrote songs such as Odyssey’s ‘Inside Out’.

The River song album 1997

Mary Moved to London in 1994 as a solo artist, and recorded and wrote her first solo album ‘River Song’ a fusion of jazz and pop songs produced and arranged by funk bassist Kuma Harada. ‘River Song’ includes respected musicians such as Incognito’s drummer Richard Bailey and Guitarist Ian Bairnson who worked extensively with Kate Bush and Alan Parsons. Max Middelton the great piano player is also featured on ''We all hold the key''. Another featured musician is Snowy white (Thin Lizzy), and of course Kuma himself who plays Bass.

Scotland 2000

In 2000 Mary moved back to Scotland and carried on with her singing and writing. She paired up with piano player Avril Evans and resumed gigging with her album songs, and a whole set of jazz and blues standards. She also paired up with Kevin Murray on guitar, featured on her new album ‘Life ain’t Like Hollywood’ on Mary Mac records. The album has been well received by musicians and the industry.

Life Ain''t Like Hollywood

This new release from Scottish singer songwriter Mary Mac has been nine years in coming. The wait is over and what a fine album Life Ain''t Like Hollywood is. By surrounding herself with the crème de la crème of Scotland''s Jazz fraternity Mary has a gorgeous platform on which to layer her romantic, witty, and engaging songs.

Mary is undoubtedly a bright talent: a thoughtful, optimistic singer-songwriter with a slew of great tunes and ear-sticking lyrics. Audiences across Scotland have been captivated by her live performances and by her excellent live radio performances. Graeme Scott, of Leith FM, described her appearance there as "one of the most delightful session guests ever".

Blues Matters magazine noted approvingly ''Kick your shoes off, open a bottle of wine with, of course, pleasant company, and let the mellow sounds of this lovely album ease your day to a close''.

Brian Kellock, Kevin Murray, Ronnie Rae and Ian Stoddart mostly provide the accompaniment along with Ailsa McInroy, Andy James, John Rae, Avril Evans and Mario Caribe also lending their talents.

The song and the title track of Mary Macs new album “Life Ain''t Like Hollywood" is a dig at the monotony and traditional roles of domesticated life. The album contains contrasting and varied subject matter. You can hear Mary’s sense of humour in ‘Throwing All My Rags Away’ and her love of animals surfaces in the lyrics of ‘Darling Deer’.

The sumptuous arrangements of ''A Time That Was Yesterday'' and ''Crescent Moon'' are redolent of times past but make no mistake this a modern Smooth Jazz album sitting very comfortably alongside the works of the likes of Peter Grant, Jamie Cullum, Michael Bublē and Clare Teal.

“Life Ain''t Like Hollywood" has all the nice romantic touches and is a real touch of class with a capital C.
