This 9 piece band with flute, alto/soprano sax, tenor/soprano sax and clarinet, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone features saxophonist Donny McCaslin and guitarist Mick Goodrick plays Råberg''s originals with vigor and soul.
See below what Boston Phoenix wrote about Råberg''s compositions.
"Råberg''s muisc moves in subtle, wave-like rhythmic variations through extended song forms colored by warm, pastel harmonies." Jon Garelick, The Boston Phoenix
From the liner notes:
A few notes about the compositions.
It was snowing, a lot, the schools were closing, and everybody was happy when I wrote Snowaltz. As I started writing for the setting on this recording I heard the possibilities of exploring the lush harmonies as well as the linear melodic movement in this piece.
Nightfall was inspired by the nightfall at my house. Admittedly this composition shows some inspiration from my big hero, Wayne Shorter.
I asked my daughter what she thought of my new composition. She said, "I think it''s Cool But Confusing." With all its poly-modality, changing meters, and metric modulations I couldn''t think of a more appropriate title.
Chrysalis the hard-shelled cocoon of a moth or butterfly. For me the word chrysalis also stands for development, from seed to bloom. Everything in this composition is derived from a tone set taken from the last melody line in Snowaltz, (D-F-G-Bb-B-D-Eb-F#-G.) The trumpet exposes the "seed" very boldly and everything develops from there.
This piece is also derived from the tone set in Chrysalis. This time I treated it in a much looser way, not adhering to it but used it rather as an off stamp. The very light chamber music qualities made me think of Silhouettes dancing on a curtain.
Inspired by Henri Matisse''s painting called Le Luxe, which translates into "The Light".
There''s no literal relation but the improvised solo bass section creates a contrast, body against light and color, movement against landscape, wood against brass.
This piece was written in the moment of joy when I saw across a field that my three children were coming home on the Yellow Bus. The groove is a Brazilian "Baiao" and the soprano sax duet really brings out what the piece is about.
Sculpture IV and Sculpture V are two collective free improvisations. In Sculpture IV we use a twelve tone row C-G-E-B-Ab-Eb-D-A-Bb-F-Gb-Db freely at times.
Hope you enjoy it! Bruno Råberg
