Details:
Rachel O''Neal started her musical career as a lead vocalist in a variety of bands in the early 1990''s, but has of late been honing her craft as a songwriter and solo acoustic performer based in Athens, GA. The reception she has gotten at her acoustic shows prompted her to get into the studio and record a fully produced version of the collection of songs she has been playing live. The culmination of her efforts is Rachel’s debut record, Getaway.
For this record, Rachel is joined by some extremely talented musicians. Getaway was recorded by acclaimed producer John Keane at his studio in Athens. John also lent his considerable musical talent to each of the tracks. His genius in the subtle layering of electric, bass, pedal steel, and acoustic guitar parts, as well as mandolin, keyboard and background vocals help convey the breadth and depth of emotions contained in these songs. Accomplished live and session drummer, Andrew Hanmer, provided the heartbeat of the up-tempo songs on the album, while well-known jazz upright bassist, Neal Starkey, set the mood with his alternately mellow and thumping grooves. Domingo Ortiz of Widespread Panic rounded out the rhythm section with a myriad of his percussion instruments. Completing this all-star lineup is renowned musician Randall Bramblett (Traffic, Steve Winwood), who contributed melodic piano and vibrant saxophone parts to the record.
This record is an eclectic blend of indie-rock, jazz, and southern-tinged Americana. Rachel’s fluid, soulful vocals artfully convey lyrics that are semi-autobiographical yet touch on universal themes: love, loss, hope, freedom and inner strength. The songs range from coping with the loss of her husband to enjoying all that life still has to offer. The title track is a light-hearted, head-bopping escape; “When You’re Not Here” is a smoky, late-night piano jazz club tribute to romance; and “I Believe in Love,” with it’s pedal steel, shows Rachel’s southern roots. No matter the listener’s musical vantage point, everyone will recognize themselves somewhere in this record.
