Details:
The Anodyne Blues Band, a band The band was formed in the fall of 2007 in New York City when two former collaborators decided to team up again. Guitarist and vocalist Chris Botta had been in numerous area groups but realized that his true love was the blues. He called upon drummer Christopher Trotta to join his new group. They recruited bassist Aaron Chesler, and after their first time playing together, the three never looked https://www.tradebit.com the band is proud to unleash their debut effort, a five song EP featuring four original tunes, recorded at Excello Studios in Williamsburg by Hugh Pool. The R&B flavored, “Rebound Blues” kicks it off with a catchy chorus-driven song that includes a funky outro. The slide rave-up, “Just Ain’t Right” follows close on its heels with some greasy slide that manages to recall Muddy Waters and Duane Allman by turns. Slowing down the pace is “Lonely Girl,” a slow blues about a girl who manages to stay single, despite her many charms. The band’s hard driving version of the Robert Johnson’s “Stop Breaking Down,” most notably covered by the Rolling Stones on Exile On Mainstreet follows with crunchy guitar and a solid, forceful groove topped by more incisive slide work. “Drunk Dialer,” based on a true story, ends the brief but energetic set with a frenetic pace and smooth, fuzztone leadwork. In the studio, the band utilized vintage amps from the 50s and although the result hardly sounds like a Chess record, you can really feel the texture, color and tonal variation that so often is missing today. The band’s sound draws on blues staples like Muddy Waters, Freddie King and Sonny Boy Williamson with a helping of Texas guitar legend Johnny Winter leering in from the side. They also find time to slow things down and tap into some of the timeless grooves of Jimmy Reed. The resulting brew is filtered through the lens of the late ‘60s powerhouse sounds of Cream and Led Zeppelin along with a healthy dose of The Rolling Stones. Botta states that a major inspiration to form the band came when he saw a tribute to Hubert Sumlin at B.B. King’s on Forty-Second Street that featured Levon Helm on drums. “The song ‘Going Down To Mainstreet’ really came across to me and his voice hit me really hard.” The word Anodyne came up when the band was looking for a name. Defined by Webster’s as “anything that relieves pain,” the association with the blues plus a touch of modern irony seemed a good fit. The name has a distinctly old-timey yet almost futuristic ring, a quality with a foot in the past and a foot in the future that the ABB embodies. Well, maybe one foot in the 50s and one foot in the 70s. Come down to one of their dynamic shows and see for yourself.
