Keith Taylor is an incredible jazz pianist with a gift for arranging familiar songs in a way that makes them fresh again. Jazz fans in the Huntsville, Alabama area are well acquainted with his lyrical touch and harmonic adventurousness.
The Keith Taylor Trio also includes Tom Branch on drums and Jim Cavender on bass. Tenor saxophonist Greg Chambers spices up the instrumentation as a special guest on one track. The musicians have played together in various groups for over twenty years, which leads to a cohesive sound and strong group interplay.
The group recorded these holiday songs at the University of Alabama in Huntsville''s Roberts Hall in three sessions during the spring of 2008.
The familiarity of Christmas songs often makes them wonderful springboards for jazz improvisation, as fans already know, but these performances have been cleverly arranged to keep them from sounding too familiar. "Up On The Housetop" and "Good King Wenceslas" are re-imagined with latin rhythmic underpinning, while "Silent Night" and "Away In A Manger" are completely reharmonized in a manner reminiscent of the late Bill Evans. Each member of the trio is given ample solo space, but swinging group interplay remains their primary focus.
